King or Profile hubs

So what do you guys think.  Should I spend the extra money on king hubs? Or are the profile elites just as good? I am not concerned with money just want the best. Are the kings that badass?

I do want the best big_smile. This is my main ride. Not to sound dumb bit what do you mean by big gearing? Would they clear my speed series team frame? ( I know the frame is not the best by today's term but it my favorite all time frame).

Re: King or Profile hubs

I love my elites. I've own known two riders who have/had King's on there race bikes. Biggest issue is that they have to be sent into a certified repair shop for any maintenance. We don't have one in my area so that would be an issue. I think the nearest one is about 200 miles away.

Profiles can be 100% maintained by the rider or just about any credible LBS. That was a big selling point in my decision. I like the Chris King hubs, but I have to race my bike 50+ times a year. If I need to fix them I can do so with little or no downtime.

Re: King or Profile hubs

That is a good point. You can get every profile part easy. I am from a lbs so getting a hold if king shouldn't be to bad either. hmm

Re: King or Profile hubs

Kings have 72 points of engagement I believe...Elites have 204...I've ridden and raced both...they're both top of the line, BUT...

Unless you have money to burn and want to show it off at the same time...Then the Kings are the way to go...Both are great, but I prefer racing on my elites.

Would you like a Fat Tire, Big Sprocket, or Short Rear End. Pick two.

Gearings 12 t or down aren't happening on kings so nothing on new school freestyle frames.

Profiles are almost sounding better.  204 engagement points big_smile I guess this is kinda my high end bike. And I will be getting parts at wholesale so the money doesn't matter to much.

Oh that's no problem I usually run 42-45 / 16 depending on conditions. But thanks for heads up.

No mention of stealth? They always seem to pop up in these debates. I like the kings.

Just looked them up. They didn't really excite me.  I kind of like and am leaning towards the kings also.(plus they will match the headset) I know Dave Thomas from Speed Dream wheels and it seems he uses a lot of king hubs on MTB wheels with excellent reviews. But I have always loved profile products hmm I guess I was looking for some rider reviews.

Re: King or Profile hubs

You can't go wrong with either one.  I like Profiles better myself, but would love a set of Kings on any bike of mine as well.  Stealth is definitely part of this group of the best hubs though, absolutely instant engagement and totally silent to be sneaky sneaky big_smile

Re: King or Profile hubs

either or.  Both excellent.  I think you can upgrade everything on Elites to Ti and ceramic bearings and send the price well over King hubs (probably could do the same with king?)

I was a little let down when I changed the bearings on my front profile mini hub, very average and el cheapo bearings.  You are paying for the great machine work and USA labor costs a bit there, but I love the way they look and will run nice bearing and keep these hubs for good.

Would love a set of Elites, just really like the way they look too.  Either set king/elite will last a lifetime.

Re: King or Profile hubs

Hubs are up in air but leaning towards Kings. It would be cool to have almost all king bearings.

Why we are on this what is a bad ass rim to lace whatever beauties I decide on to? I prefer something I can get with red ano but could always use red nips.

LOL Never had a cassette hub before. I don't mind loud the white freewheel the bike had sounded hella cool cool
I am still stuck from the opinions I have gotten. I never had hubs from profile or king but had other parts by each and they rocked. big_smile

Same thing here, dude. For my SX build I decided that I was going to go with the best out there, almost regardless of cost. I didn't want to put anything on there that I would need to upgrade. Not often you get to do that, but it is sweet when you do.

Re: King or Profile hubs

I'd say Profiles....WAY less finicky and less work. I have & had King's on a number of Bikes and they need periodic cleaning, lubing (you need to use King's Ring Drive lube) and adjustments. If you dont have the adjustment right, you can damage the axle easily if you ride with them loose at all or get dirt inside (I have worked at King Authorized shops and serviced a few dozen of them in the last 6 years, so I've had hands on experience).
I've also have run older Profiles for years and have a few sets that are over 15 years old. In that time I've replaced the bearings, added a shim and put new pawls and springs in about 4 years ago and theyre running great.
I just ordered a set of Elites for my race cruiser after riding a friends bike that has them, def fast engagement big_smile

Re: King or Profile hubs

Thanks help & input via PM  "G"

After looking in to the hubs more I am leaning towards Profile. They seem to have more options available and a little easier to work on and get parts for. It will still be a few days till I order some and would appreciate any input. I looked at the Stealth they just don't interest me. I would like/wanted the Kings but am going for quality not just the fanciest hubs.

What has not been hit on is the quality, smoothness, & resistance of the stock bearings.
