Looks like it got un-stickied... I guess maybe more people are building 1/3 scale PK Rippers than wheels... LOL

Re: complete WHEEL BUILDING instructions

Hello,i have been waiting for years to find a post like this.I want to attempt one soon,i Was wondering though,if you could put up one for 48 spoke wheels or is it the same? Also you seem like a pro i need to ask you some more questions about spokes and cross pattern and the pro's and cons. Please let me know if you would be willing to answer a few questions of mine.i will just PM you with the inquiries.
Very helpfull post,thanks so much.

Re: complete WHEEL BUILDING instructions

jonny mo pm replied,   also yes you can follow the exact same instructions on a 48 spoke wheel for a 4 cross pattern..

and for all the GT guys,   the pattern works the same on superlace hubs..  but when you start your first spoke make sure its in the outer hole on the hub flange and all the spokes are out-bound on these.

Re: complete WHEEL BUILDING instructions

Hey Caleb ...

Great write up. I will definately be trying this technique next time. But  what about the dishing of the wheels?.. were u lucky or did u have bike shop take care of that. I just built a Rhynolite w/ a front GT mohawk hub and my dish was a lil bit too far to one side.Asside from that, even tho it`s true side to side, I have a "hop" when I spin it. I was told that it needed to be radial trued.  Also... how do u determine the right length spokes to use? The wheel I laced ended up being a 2 cross pattern. Dont the rears use shorter spokes on the chain side ??/

what about on a rear hub like getting past the sprocket.

you cant lace with the freewheel installed... infact if you have a hub that is not laced with a freewheel instaled it is very possiable the freewheel was stuck on and the previous owner cut all the spokes off..    its goto be pretty difficult to get that freewheel now..  some say use a strap wrench on the hub body then try and turn the frewheel, obviously you need the correct freewheel remover also..    if that fails, someone once said try to lace the entire other side of the wheel than use the whell for turning leverage (clamp your freewheel removal tool in a vice)....

Had a situation like that once. bought a hub w/ freewheel attached. being an auto mechanic, I put the hub in a vice. Put on the freewheel removal tool and used my impact gun. Came off w/no problem...and no damage...smile

Re: complete WHEEL BUILDING instructions

Dang Caleb, you build wheels the hard way !!
If you insert ALL the spokes into the hubs first, you can just lace up one entire side, flip over and lace the other side.

ive seen this way while researching and didnt like it.  the way i layed it out is so easy after a few sets of wheels you shouldnt even need help..

i can lace a wheel in less than 10 minutes and dont use the instructions anymore..

I recently build my first wheelset using Sheldon Brown's guide.  It also covers truing the wheels, which is actually pretty straightforward if you sit down and think through the logic first.  Does require a lot of patience though!  http://sheldonbrown.com/wheelbuild.html

Re: complete WHEEL BUILDING instructions

Do you round spoke lengths up or down? I have calculated 178.2mm front and 178.8 mm rear for Sun 4-Play rims and Sun Jabba the Hubset 48 spoke 4x. They will be damn near truck wheels!

178mm will work.    1mm usually does not make a differance, you could still go up or down 1mm..
