Re: Gentlmen... may i introduce...... the Skyway Ace Rim

Would be interesting to try it on a set but i suspect pro class sized holes in the rim would make it far too weak to ride sad

True, but one could drill a shallow "deposit pocket" for paint. If one wanted to achieve a metallic reflective look, one could deposit a silver base coat in each "pocket" and then a metalcast "canodize" paint layer on top in each pocket ...

Ill bet he wanted some z rims and didn't want to pay for them and was creative. That would be my guess.

You don't read much do you..? He CLEARLY stated WHY he did it
"I started off with a tatty, damaged and hubless set of early etched logo skyways which Scorcher Mick was kind enough to let go at a good price."

So ill explain, his set of jacked up skyway mag were jacked up. No hubs chunks missing... 100% unrideable..... Can't be used in a safe manner... Nore can they be used on a show bike. So he did what any one with half a brain did and made them work..
Lol sorry. But it's right there lol.

you say lol but you dont mean it. its more of an uncomfortable chuckle I think

wonder how they true? are you drilling the holes at  angles or strait? my guess on the hole spacing is a seamstress tape and a mark?

Re: Gentlmen... may i introduce...... the Skyway Ace Rim

Wow. I did this almost 30 years ago. I would get major rim foldage doing rock-walks, bunny-hop 180's and anything that put real stress on the rim. It would always snap back though. I really didn't understand how it didn't rip the spokes through the rim, but it didn't.

You did an excellent job on the ones you made. I am sure the ones I did never even came close to looking this good.

Cheers guys. Good guess Neil smile i am a cabinet maker. The various bit of machinery come in handy from time to time for bmx projects wink

Squirrelsmith had it right with the spoke spacing. Its fairly easy to work out the circumference of the rim and divide by the number of spoke holes. I just cut a little square block of oak, lay the rim on a flat surface, marked a start point then offered up the block, marking and moving along with every hole.

At first i thought "WTBloody h7ll? You have way too much time on your hands!!!" But as i scrolled, your fine, detailed work became very apparent. I have no choice but to say KUDO's dude! They're probably stronger than Z-rims. I personally wouldn't do that because i prefer factory OG & cutting up OG Skyway Tuffs is a no no... but again KUDO's! Great work! Maybe send this to Skyway or Ed & see what they think? They might produce some & you'll get a cut of the moolah cool

The whole point was that they were busted and worthless to begin with.  He cut up worthless junk and breathed new life into it.
