Re: Gentlmen... may i introduce...... the Skyway Ace Rim

Here you go, anyone need a project?
They are in the BETA section, ACS Stoker Zytel Mags dated 1979

I would be willing to cut out (hacksaw) the hubs before shipping, if someone
wants to pay for them first. Would save some money on shipping.

Shipping available to the Continental USA or Hawaii only.

You do know you just might be the catalyst for Skyway to invest in some one off limited edition type run. Or for another company to totally bite the ides and run with it. I'm definitely curious to see them in action. Will the act like Z Rims? Won't they? Sign up some Test Pilots!!!

I started off with a tatty, damaged and hubless set of early etched logo skyways which Scorcher Mick was kind enough to let go at a good price.

Got some red anno suzue hubs off JT Racing and Del was kind enough to send me a few different sized decals to get the scale right inside the hub

http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x45 … 111256.jpg

Laced them up tonight in a crazy pattern (spokes were too short  wink) just to see how they would take the tension. I actually shat myself nearing the end of the lacing as the rim was a real crazy shape but it trued up well and should be lovely when i lace them in a 3x pattern  big_smile

I did this bitd too with some pos mag  wheels from K-mart.  The metal hub in the rear mag stripped out rendering them useless.  Took a sabre saw and cut out the spokes of the mags.  For the spoke spacing, I took a used rim strip from a 36 hole rim and put it on the what was left of the mag rim and then drilled the holes.   Not an exact science but it worked.  Yours look great

brilliant   IDA sounds so simple .

I have a set of tuffs that have multiple cracks on the webs and are basically useless. I re-dyed them (the same color), cleaned them up and removed the brake rub but at the end of the day they are OK to hang on the wall and look at.....thats about it.

This idea seems like a good one on a set of wheels as badly damaged as mine. At least they will get some use and not just sit in the corner as a bad buy...hmm

It's actually the angle of the spoke from side-to-side that gives the wheel its strength in that direction. That's why "dished" wheels are weak in one direction.

Re: Gentlmen... may i introduce...... the Skyway Ace Rim

Went for it. I'm doing a set of tuffII wheels. I'm going for a freestyle set with 71 spokes. I started last night and have gotten both wheels routered and drilled. I'm goin to sand them tonight then in going to dye them yellow. They were white under all that spray paint.

I have a set of GT 6-spoke Mags I might take to work and do the same in between jobs . I could probably program one of the FADAl VMC's to drill out all the holes for me . cool

Re: Gentlmen... may i introduce...... the Skyway Ace Rim

I got the rims almost ready to dye tonight, I still need to bleach them before dying due to the discolorations in fresh material as opposed to the old stained white. I grinded the spoke mounts down with a 28g roloc disc, then sanded my way up to 320 grit. I drilled first so I dust have to go back and de burr the holes. I'm going with yellow on the rim then black nips to chrome spokes to yellow hubs. Kinda original I know. wink these are staggered drilled not one in front of the next like it used to happen to 36 hole rims. This will be the fourth set of wheels I've built, so I'm still pretty novice at this.

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k545/jbrown1168/2014-08/1D265219-C84B-4764-B5CD-C146B8EE491B_zpslwxwxdjk.jpg

Just faint discoloration in the white. I might lower the valve stem area a bit also.
These are also not etched on the side wall so I have a stencil planned out for that.

Might paint the old stars white and hang them out as Christmas decorations.
