1984 Redline RL-20II

My Grail......Early Japanese Model 1984 Redline RL-20ii
OG Paint,Chrome, & Decals.....

This is the same model bike I received for my 13th Birthday from my grandparents. Granny promised me any bike I wanted so I sat for months building it in my head with all the top of the line parts of the day. I remember looking at the centerfold Redline had in the BMX mags back then and debating which color was to be mine.  I really wanted the Radberry, but did'nt want to get picked on from the other kids for having a Pink/Radberry bike, we all know how cruel kids can be, lol, so I went with the Teal instead.  Now 26 years later I finally got my Radberry RL 20ii.  I spared no expense on this build, just like my Grandfather did for me over 26 years ago. I can still remember  him peeling off the 7 bills for it back in Jan of 85 and saying...
" I could have bought him a used car for that!"lol.......Enjoy!

I love the bike. smile

I can not sit still. I have been tested for A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. and have neither. I don't need coffee, I just need a B.M.X. or surfboard to consistently ride and I'll be happy. smile

Re: 1984 Redline RL-20II

This is high in the running for my favorite bike ever. cool

That stem and seat post clamp look insanely cool on this bike, and it's in great shape.

Didn't you post a pic somewhere of you bitd, riding your teal RL-20II?

Because the 1st RL20 Prostylers didn't have frame standers but the RL20II did on all the years 84-88. THe RL20 didn't get them til 86 I believe.

Spector007, This is a beautiful RL20II. smile

However it's an '85 model.  Redline didn't made an '84 RL20II, only an '84 RL20.

This has been the topic for endless debate. Redline did infact did produce the RL-20ii in 1984 starting with 250 sets that were all white, both the frame and forks, these were released in late 84 from Japan. The frame set serial numbers starting with RD were produced in 84. My first RL 20-ii was purchased on January 4th of 1985, my B-Day, so unless they made them in 3 days they were also made in 84....the RD serial number indicates it is an earley model, and can very well be an 85 model, but it was indeed fabricated in 84. wink

I agree Redline fabricated the frame sets and parts in '84 for the RL20II but just like automobiles, a model year car is usually made the previous year.

Re: 1984 Redline RL-20II

I own one of these RD serial redlines and it's a bit weird why they made a small run of 250 not only in white but all 85 colours. I've yet to see a yellow 84 ( yellow forks and rear end) but I have seen teal, radberry and white. I guess redline wanted to launch best possible product in 85 added chrome ( amazing touch) in 84 they were still feeling this freeste thing out . All early 1984 freestyle bikes are highly prized and rare with not many survivors but there is no question an RD serial is an 84 issue . No 1985 has this designation but the early release 85s were Japanese made straight chain stays identical to 84 ( it's an easy way to confirm Japan made) the other that most people don't look at is fork peg holes. The Japanese made forks are just as sought after because at some point in late 85 early 86 they started welding around peg holes. The Japanese early forks were braised ( clean no weld circle for the peg) . I was lucky enough to get 84 OG frame and fork in great condition but no paint left. It was a prime canditate for a show build and I did! Hope that also helps someone out there:)!

Re: 1984 Redline RL-20II

Never seen a full hazard version as Shiznitme said either. I do however stare at a og 84 Radberry on the daily..lol. I have seen a chrome and hazard yellow RD 84 serial like Spector007 has.
