1982 Mongoose California Special

California Special Survivor Mongoose 20”, came with all OEM except tires, grips, pads.

SOLD the Bike no longer have it. BUT love looking at the pics.

UPDATE
Finally got around to putting all of the original parts back on that came with the bike when I purchased it a few years back.  The grips, brake cable and pedals are not original but close for now.  I also have a new California Special Bar Pad (with the California bear) that I will take a few pictures of .
1982 Mongoose Frame and forks.
Pro Class rims with blue tires and blue strips in rims (tires are not same blue and old)
Japan Suzue hubs (H 2) marked.
Mongoose bars.
Mongoose Californian bar pad.
Dia Compe pre bent brake lever.
Shimano 890 caliper (82’ date).
Mongoose seatclamp.
Mongoose crank.
Viscount Saddle.
SR pedals.
Mongoose bottom bracket.
mongoose Headset.
Takagi Spider
Takagi Chainring.
Mongoose Stamped  Stem
Mongoose Stamped seat post
Came across this one by accident.  After researching a bit on Vintage Mongoose and here on BMXMuseum, I determined it was a 1982 California Special Mongoose 20”.  Previous owner had changed the brakes, seat and pedals but still had original and included in sale.  I thought it had to be some kind of upgraded Mongoose as it had a cross of parts and decals between a regular Mongoose and a Pro Class and Supergoose.  I love it and can't wait to ride it again!
Also, I have gotten a lot of questions if the rear brake bridge has 3 or 1 hole.  It has only the 1 hole for the bolt for the brake.
Thanks

I had a similar one...  seemed to be bits from everywhere but I loved it so. Had the same sticker configuration, came with Red Skyway Tuff IIs.

Nice bike. Exactly what decals are different from the base Mongoose?

THANK YOU
WELL,,, THE  STICKERS THAT ARE RED ON THE CHAIN STAYS SHOULD BE GOLD AND THE FRAME STICKERS HAVE A FLAT LOOKING APPEARANCE LIKE ON THE MONGOOSE II BIKE FRAME

I was actually referring to Kendals bike, but that frame of yours is pretty decent too.

According to what I can tell in the picture in the `83 catalog, the base Mongoose in chrome has the exact same decals, including the red stripes on the seat stays.

Here's the California Special:

From what I can see, the only difference between the two decal sets is that the California Special also has this "Special Edition" sticker that had been around since 1981:

The way I understood it, the only difference between the two was the upscale parts and pad set that were added to make the California Special higher end then the base Mongoose, but still under the Team's & Super's, That's why I was asking Kendal about his bike, since he seems to have all of the correct components of the CS.

Re: 1982 Mongoose California Special

Do the bars on these CS's have weep holes on the underside or the crossbar?

Good question. I have the same frame (more possibly the base model as it had with snowflake chainwheel when I got it). I didn't have bars so I used a set from an 83 Expert, which has weep holes. Are these bars correct for this frame?

Re: 1982 Mongoose California Special

Sorry for the delay, I checked mine (it was hanging up) I could not feel any weep holes under the cross bar.

Re: 1982 Mongoose California Special

Thanks Kendal, so you probably have the ss ones which have the Mongoose stamp. I see those sell for mucho dinero. But I find that the cheaper 83 Taiwanese Expert bars don't look too out on my 82 goose. The shape is still quite close. I suspect the correct bars for mine are the ones with the pinched crossbar. If anyone can confirm that I'd appreciate it. I'll post a link to it.

Its an 82, so I think its from the catalogue that is earlier than the standard frames seen in the catalogues above.
