Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto

Some of the gear I am using to get the job done.

My ultrasonic heated parts cleaner

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg581/Richie-Rich71/IMAG0879.jpg

My professional jewelry polishing machine; this is not a bench grinder, its a very high speed super smooth machine, the stand is actually a vaccum system, that sucks the polishing dust and filters the exhaust.

Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto

In thinking the translucent red coating on my Shimano DX pedals was anodizing I used Drano to remove it, then used Ferric Chloride to desmut......big mistake.  They were factory painted it was not anodizing.  The chemicals got hot to the point of boiling...scary nasty stuff.  Ended up doing some damage to my excellent condition pedal, luckily just one, and what I plan on doing will hide most of the damage anyway.

Left one was just stripped, right one got deeply etched due to the chemicals :(

Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto

My first rule is..... It's your bike, do what ever you want. HOWEVER, if I was going to do another 22, I would keep it as close to OG as possible. To me, any other parts don't look quite right on them, unlike say a Trickstar where you can put different cranks or stem on it, and it still looks good

Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto

So I had wrecked one of my pedals with acid, but some polishing and paint and some creative license and I think they look great, better than anything that came out of the factory in my opinion.   I could have gone nuts and made them mirror smooth, and I could have thrown them into a tumbler, but its just not worth it to me, this bike will be ridden, not hard, but it is not a carpet queen.

Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto

Frame is amazingly clean but there was some surface dust/rust here and there, so I cleaned it up.....I just need that damn touch up paint to fix the few little nicks here and there, and we are good to go.   Funny thing is this bike suffered more paint damage while it was stored then from riding, I have my dad to thank for that....:/

That brownish spot in the vent hole is silicone, this baby has been sealed shut since I bought it.....no inside rust at all.

Very nice. i like how you sealed all the weep holes BITD. Very smart. Question.... did you refinish the ends of your pedals? or did you just strip the paint off?

Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto

The pedals had some minor rash on them which I sanded and polished off.   I had these at the tail end of my riding "career" as a result they were in very good shape.   I got them at a close out price, because no one wanted red..I think they were like $30 NIB.

Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto

Well now I just await my parts to finish this build.  Everything on the way.

Back when I got my first Redline I ralized that the brake mount tube hole was oversized.  I dont knwo if it was just my two Redlines, or if they were all this way.  Consequently it was very easy to overtighten the nut trying to secure the brake so that there was as little slop and as high brake efficiency as possible.  On my 600b I managed to crush the tube a good deal.  On this RL-20II I also did a little damage.  So I wondered what I can do.   Using a metal roller from my dad's jewelry manufactuing shop I flattened a penny and cut it to fit and rolled it to make a bushing to not only prevent crushing but to also take up any slop, this is a circa 1986 mod.  the result, the brake does not budge, no need to overtighten and less rubbing wear on the chrome.

Re: RL20II clean up...not quite resto

I see why these old school bikes cost so much, for as great a shape as my bike is, its still taking a ridiculous amount of time and effort as well as a significant amount of money to get it back to the condition I find acceptable.

Bike looks so sweet.

I would keep the original decals on it.  I do understand you dilemma.

I like decals to look clean and you have a nice reproduction set right there!

Keep the pics coming!
