1984 Skyway T/A

My holy grail!

Finally got one in my collection! so stoked. Couldnt afford one when i was younger and as i got older i thought spending that kind of money was rediculous so i waited for one over the years to come by at a fair price and it happened. I even got a set of decals with it. Gonna do this one up in white. That was always my favorite TA. The chrome is really nice on this one and the dropouts are fantastic. Ill post more pics as the restoration continues.

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

UPDATE - Okay, so ppl say dont get this powdered. They say to find one already powdered and trade them for this chrome one. So if anyone has a freshly powdered white one of these and wants a chrome one I guess ill entertain some offers. I also have brand new decals for this. All id have to do is give it an OA bath and you can sticker it as you please.
just pm me and we'll see what happens.

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

I would just paint it white and not rough up the chrome this way the OG chrome will always be there if you ever want to go back, if you get one already powdered it may be raw underneath and you won't know if there were any repairs done. BITD mine was chrome then white, then chrome then purple and back to chrome, thank God they sold sticker kits at the local bike shop.

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

dude, here's what I think. If you ever decide to sell this in future, you might get more money saying it has original skyway chrome on it. so the trick is to go over it with a can of white spray paint after cleaning the entire frame with some solvent like alcohol. a thin coat of paint will do. when the time comes for you to sell, just remove the paint with thinner or something.

lots of people prepare the surface before painting or powercoating, meaning they sand it or blast it so that the surface becomes rough. This makes the paint stick better, but it ruins the chrome.

i just painted a bike purple. the paint comes off easily. I just use a small paintbrush to touch it up when needed. If you're not riding the bike everyday you wont even need to do this.

Nice grab, I just checked out his auctions and he hadn't listed them yet, he states they are 83 with OG decals but they seem to have the smaller fork sticker that were introduced in 84, his 7-83 frame also has the 84 Tru Temper decal but not the 84 down tube sticker, interesting seems a bit too early for Skyway to starting mixing production maybe some were swapped BITD.

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

Wow...if the chrome really looks like it does in the pics, I couldn't imagine painting it.  That's just me though, guess I came up in the "Chrome Age".  Whatever u do, it's gonna look sweet!

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

They don't have actual dates but you can tell 83 & 84 by original decals, the 82 Japan made have a rake and several other clear differences from a US one.
