Best 12" bike?

So my twins are big enough to ride a 12" bike with training wheels, so I'm  on the hunt. There's the junk at wal mart, but what else is out there?  Saw a Specialized and a Giant at an LBS today but they were $200+.  Anyone got some advice for me?  Thanks.

I agree.

It was cooler for me than it was for them and they were on 16" in no time flat.

Unless you just bump into a great deal, get something dirt cheap.

Re: Best 12" bike?

Yard sale or craigs list is your best bet. they will be on a 12" for a very short time. and could care less what type . I have 4 kids. and bought the first one a nice one what a mistake.

Re: Best 12" bike?

I work at a LBS, so I'm a bit biased.  I went cheap Walmart style (despite my better judgement), and the bike was far beyond crap if not dangerous.  Bottom bracket blew up after about a week.  Headset, handlebars, and axel nuts never stayed tight/adjusted.  Badly engineered, the chainline was way off causing the chain to be thrown all the time. And a really strange creaking that I was never able to figure out.

I figured the same as all the rest of you, even working in bike shop.  The sad thing is, with my employee discount I could have bought the bike store bike for about $30 or $40 more.

If you can afford it, buy the bike store bike.  Try dealing with the big boxes on warranty issues, or go back there for repairs.  If you do buy the big box store bike, don't bring it into the LBS to fix it, we really hate touching those things;)

Re: Best 12" bike?

Or grab a garage sale/secondhand bike.  You'd probably be better off buying a decent quality garage sale bike.

I have a pink girls Trek 12" I'll send you for the cost of shipping.  I would have to dig it out of storage, and check it out.  Should be ready to go, it's been sitting for a few years, so not sure.

Anyone have an LBS 12" bike for my son???  I will certainly be keeping an eye out in the neighborhood, on CL, Goodwill, etc.

Re: Best 12" bike?

Small piece of advice as I just went through this with my daughter who is a 5yr old.  We bought a box store huffy bike a 1.5yr ago and like others the bike suck, but it has been okay for her.  Do not putting training wheels on, lower the seat and pull the pedals......  Essentially making your own balance bike.

After watching my daughter ride around clueless for a year and half I did as I suggested above and for 2 weeks she pedaled it around with her feet (also the incentive of her new Haro Z16 that she is not allowed to ride until she ditched the training wheels), last Sunday through her pedals on and she has not looked back big_smile
Made for a awesome Father's day.

And I would buy a cheap bike for a 12", kids out grow them so fast there is no point in spending good $$$ on them IMO.

Re: Best 12" bike?

Just my 2 cents and experience. I have had the crap bikes that grand parents have bought my kids and they don't help them learn to ride. As soon as I put them on a good bike it was easier. I just bought my 5 year old a 18" Cult ( she is a tall girl) this is the best complete kids bike I have ever seen. Aluminium frame, good components and built right. They come in a 12", 16" and 18".

Re: Best 12" bike?

Good ish on making my own balance bike.

So I'd like to get them a good solid ride, not one from Wal Mart.  Anyone got one for a girl or boy they want to sell me?  My twins (boy and a girl) and I would be mucho grateful, and I'd rather buy from a known entity (the bmxmuseum) than anyone else.  I sent a PM to Jeff359.  Anyone else?  Please let me know.

Re: Best 12" bike?

i don't have kids (yet!?). . . but my impression is that tiny wheels are inherently unstable and that a kid learning to ride on 10"s or 12"s is actually at a disadvantage.  micro mini 16"s to me seem like the best choice.    also definitely support the concept of Strider style skoot bikes--from my friends with kids, i see them way more confident and advanced scooting around and learning balance than struggling with weirdly sized cranks....

Re: Best 12" bike?

My well-heeled neighbor picked this up for his kid.  He was looking at bike store bikes but was not too impressed.  He thought it was all overpriced branding of lackluster bikes.  So, he is wealthy yet he is able to think that way.
Also he's an old bmx guy but not in the hobby now.  He likes some of my stuff but generally doesn't care too much lol.

It's a cool little belt drive bike.  I like the chain -er- belt tensioners and the craftsmanship in the frame.  The wee Maxxis tires are adorable too lol

It's funny this topic came up because I took this pic a couple of months ago.

**This is a 16 but there is a 12" balance model
