1978 Redline Proline

The Classic "Big Boy" Race Bike

Picked this up from Oneluv1979 here on the site. It was looking pretty bad when I got it, see the 4th picture. A little love and a lot of parts later and I have a great bike that I love to ride and do wheelies with. Notice the red nipples on the chrome Ukai's. The Bullseyes and the Tioga sealed bottom bracket are very smooth and the Suntour freewheel has that crisp distinctive click, click...

Re: 1978 Redline Proline

Very nice. I had one of these in 1979. First real BMX bike for me. Bought F/F from a friend for $75. It was beat--I repainted it a crappy blue right away--and the fork stripped. I couldn't keep the headset tight and couldn't pass the safety check at the newly opened race track. They let me race, but told me to fix it before the next one. I traded it for a 1978/79 MXII. It was a step down, but I wanted to race, so made the sacrifice. Always wanted another one, in white like yours. Nice ride. Congrats.

I saw the name "joekat" under Recent Bikes and knew there had to be a great Redline to scope out.  I was right - beautiful job!

Re: 1978 Redline Proline

When I was building my first real bike in 77 I almost went Redline.  Seeing that one I wish I went that way.  I went from the THE MARK 1 to a Powerlite By 79 I was on Schwinn in 1980.
You did a GREAT JOB.

That bike looks "tight" ( awesome ). Looks like my older brothers redline. Hope to build one in the near future.

Re: 1978 Redline Proline

I put on wider bars and a Kahimax seat. I took it for a ride and then had it pose for a few photos.

Joe,  Another beautiful Redline.  You have a great collection.  Is this one powder coated or painted?

Thanks Mike. It's powder coated. I started collecting 3-4 years ago and was amazed at all the bikes people had; now I'm amazed at all the stuff I have and can't seem to find time to build it all. :)

I have a local guy who does my powder coating. He's an ex BMX'er so he's easy to work with and fun to talk to.

Re: 1978 Redline Proline

The fact that your powder coater is an ex BMX'er is great.  It's apparent that he pays close attention to the details on the F/F.

Re: 1978 Redline Proline

Wow, Thanks reminding me of when I had a white Pro Line about 79/80. Got it from a buddy who had to update himself to a chrome Pro Line. First real BMX for me when stepped up from a "No Name Overseas Bike". Then it was full tilt BMX for me....Loved the Brute stems!
