87 GT Viscount Seat Restoration (GT Wings Included)...

Well, after reading on this forum on how to get rid of rust, clean and whiten plastic, I restored a seat from an 87 GT Performer Junior.  I leaned a lot along the way!  For instance... if you use vinegar to de-rust, don't leave it in over-night smile

So anyway, this is what I started with:
http://www.mouseindustries.com/bmxmuseum/gt_viscount/before1.jpg
http://www.mouseindustries.com/bmxmuseum/gt_viscount/before2.jpg

Then what I did was take the magic eraser to it, soaked the thing in vinegar to remove rust.  Then took the white parts and soaked them in Hydrogen Peroxide for a few days to whiten.

After doing all that, the side logo was obviously destroyed and gone, so I had to figure out a new way to bring it back... otherwise it's just a boring white viscount seat.

So, I have vinyl and vinyl cutting machines and decided to try to cut out the logo.  I had to use a super precise vinyl cutter because of the tiny detail, so I whipped out my KNK Zing machine and got some really thin black vinyl. Then i found the GT Winged logo from Mefisto here in the forum.  Resized it properly, cut it out and placed it.  Then clear-coated the entire seat to protect the vinyl and make it super shiny.

It turned out pretty sweet! I love it.

Here is the GT Wings Logo Vector Art (This is extremely fine detail to cut with a vinyl cutter, you need a super-experienced sign guy who knows what he's doing if you want it cut correctly)

Logos cut out

Logos applied

And here it is compared to another viscount GT seat in similar condition.
http://www.mouseindustries.com/bmxmuseum/gt_viscount/after5.jpg

Edited to add:
I clear-coated it with glossy UV protectant spray to protect the vinyl logo and keep the seat from yellowing again. I did this 3 times and now it looks pretty good. You can barely feel the logo when you rub your finger over it.  Here is a pic of it in the sunlight with glare. The vinyl is so thin that it takes the look and feel of the orange-peel the seat has.

Thanks for looking!

Re: 87 GT Viscount Seat Restoration (GT Wings Included)...

The problem with the winged logo is that the detail inside the wings is so small and tiny... that and cutter/plotter (which drags a knife) pops out the small dots inside the wings.

Originally I wanted to do a stencil, but after about 50 tries to get the inverse, I gave up and just put the vinyl on the seat permanently... which is why I clear coated it with UV spray. I figured it would help protect against yellowing as well.

The "GT - BMX" seat logo could definitely be done as a stencil though -- that doesn't have any tiny little detail.  My seat should be here soon that has that logo and will then get the right dimensions and can then make it for whoever.

To get the stencil/inverse of the winged logo, I would need a cutter that uses a laser... that doesn't cause blade drag. My buddy has one, so he is going to give it a shot.  If it works out, then we will be set for sure.

i tried the same thing with seat clamp logo. even with a 60 degree blade it was hard.

Re: 87 GT Viscount Seat Restoration (GT Wings Included)...

I can do any logo/design, as long as the pieces that have to stay on the vinyl backing are larger than 1/32". That's why I couldn't do stencils of the winged logo and just applied the vinyl as-is.

But, the "GT - BMX" logo on the older seats will be super easy to create stencils of. My seat will be here soon, then I can measure it up and create the stencils for all -- obviously they can only be used once because it's a sticky-backed stencil which you will spray over.

Re: 87 GT Viscount Seat Restoration (GT Wings Included)...

At the top of this forum there is "The best of BMX restoration" -- There are tips in there about how to whiten plastic and remove surface rust.  I would read through those and see how they did it.

I didn't go in to much detail because those posts pretty much cover all bases (i didn't want to repeat everything they said)

I would hold off until I can confirm I can create legitimate stencils. I would hate for you to remove the original one and then I come back and say "Whoops, I guess I can't do it"

if i cant do this i though just dump on the painters. still these are very catchy. note also did not want to purchase a tub of peroxide,
going to see if they have a safer way to shine a seat. great work wink

Hi, do you have any of these winged seat decals in white for a black seat?

Or these decals might be easier, if you've done these before...

Re: 87 GT Viscount Seat Restoration (GT Wings Included)...

OK -- I have done the 86 seat decals.  I have like 7 of these seats now (i have no idea why I horde these things), so first I took measurements:
http://mouseindustries.com/bmxmuseum/gt_viscount/n_measure.jpg

Then I traced the logo using my kid's crayon:
http://mouseindustries.com/bmxmuseum/gt_viscount/n_outline.jpg

I imported it and drew it (take this to your local sign shop, they can cut it for you on any color)
Click here for GT BMX seat logo vector artwork

Then I imported the vector to my vinyl cutter software, cut it out on white vinyl:
http://mouseindustries.com/bmxmuseum/gt_viscount/n_cutout.jpg

Applied some transfer tape:
http://mouseindustries.com/bmxmuseum/gt_viscount/n_transfertape.jpg

Tested it on a seat:
http://mouseindustries.com/bmxmuseum/gt_viscount/n_transfer.jpg

Matched up perfectly! Next I will do stencils. I have a seat coming that is really rough condition. I am going to try spray bombing the logo on using the inverse of the decal.

i like how you clear coated over the decals that should deter from rubbing off but paint and the stencil might last longer and look more authentic. good job.

any enamel will work good. might want to stay away from acrylics. maybe use a dull coat too so it doesnt look so shiny.

maybe use one stencil for the paint then when its dry try another stencil for the dull coat but the gt wings one looks nice just a little TOO shiny big_smile

yea just some little jars of testors black or white or whatever and then they have the dull cote too in a spray can.

i would do flat paint then dull cover coat but if the whole seat is really nice then i guess you could clear the whole thing.
