1991 Haro Sport Custom progress thread

When I spotted D.F.T.R's 2012 SUMMER OPEN BUILD-OFF (http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=413383) I remembered I'd been saving the perfect candidate.  Ever since I sold my Haro Basher I've wanted another Sport just like it.  I found one last year and have been sitting on it for a while.  I knew I wanted to add 990s and had a family member tack some on - then it sat for another 8 months.  It's turn is up.

The frame also had a little damage.  This ding on one of the chain stays.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-005.jpg

and this crack at the top of the seat tube.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-004.jpg

Both were filled with weld then filed back down.

When I found my Basher a couple of years ago I had planned on painting it neon green.  Once I got it apart and started cleaning it, the chrome was too nice to cover - so I didn't.  This time the chrome was in a lot worse shape.  Even so, this next step was hard - sanding the chrome to rough it up for primer - but I did it.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-007.jpg

It almost had a cool stainless steel look when I was done.  If I could have gotten it consistent all over I may have left it that way, but it was too hard around all the welds and such.

Here is the first coat of white primer.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-009.jpg

After a few hours of drying I applied a light coat of fluorescent yellow.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-010.jpg

I actually hung it up and didn't get to work on it for another week.  I gave it a second coat of yellow then hung it up for about another week.  Along the way I also roughed up the forks and primed them. then gave them a light coat of gloss black.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-008.jpg

I was nervous about this next step because I've never done it before.  I wanted to get a very light florescent green as the final color and decided to use an airbrush to just dust the yellow with this green.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-013.jpg

I used about half the bottle of green to get the look I was going for.  I sprayed this inside my garage and am really happy with how I could control the little bit of color I was laying down.  The droplets are so small from an airbrush that you can't even really see them unless you're inches from the paint.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-011.jpg

The last thing I did today was add a second coat of gloss black to the forks.  They almost have a piano black finish to them and I haven't even done a clear coat yet.

Re: 1991 Haro Sport Custom progress thread

Is airbrush paint chemically different than rattle can?  I've wanted to do something with an airbrush but I wasn't sure if it would hold up as well as rattle can since I wasn't going to clear over it.  looks great BTW, almost reminds me of Kawasaki green!

Thanks, I love that Kawi green too.  The airbrush paint I used is water based but I knew it would work okay from the experience of the blue Dyno (black and white stripes) I did a few years ago.  Within an hour of dusting with the green I covered it all with Rustoleum clear enamel.

Thanks!  For anyone who hasn't seen how to do properly restore a Haro Sport, check out therobster's bikes here.  Your Haro's have been my inspiration and I've followed threads, saved pics and voted for everyone you've ever built. tongue

As for decals, I have a few of Del's going on but the majority will be a custom sticker bomb.

Re: 1991 Haro Sport Custom progress thread

Sure thing.  My gun is a pretty middle-of-the-road double-action Badger 155 and is a bottom, siphon fed model.  Double action means the trigger not only presses up and down but pulls back - down lets only air through while pulling back releases the paint.  I did spend some money to buy a really good auto-shutoff pump and it works really well.  If you buy one get it from Michael's and use one of their 40% (or more) coupons that they run in the Sunday paper each week - it saved a ton for me.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-014.jpg

My gun came with the paint cup you see above and also with some larger, screw-top bottles that attach the same way.  For this job I just used the cup and added about 20 drops every few minutes.

I haven't had much free time to work on the bike but I did squeeze in about 4 layers of clear gloss so it's been getting a lot of hang-time to dry.  I probably spent more time at the computer working on decals, though.  I've had some of these for a while and have been saving up my black, white and silver artwork for the sticker bomb.  The Haro Fusion decals were my most recent stuff and I just picked them up yesterday.

I have two of these seat clamps and am planning on restoring this one.  I'm not sure if it will end up black or silver so I made a few color combos to play with.

Being Mother's Day today, I won't be touching this bike at all but hope to start assembling in the next few evenings.  More to come very soon...

Re: 1991 Haro Sport Custom progress thread

Here are a few close ups of the paint.  Only a few of the shots show where I sprayed a little heavier.

Re: 1991 Haro Sport Custom progress thread

I knew my paint job was bumpy and was hoping that enough coats of clear would cover it, but it wouldn't.  After looking at my own close-up shots I couldn't live with it and did something I've never done before - wet sand.  I took out some 800 grit, grabbed a bucket of water and went to work.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-022.jpg

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-023.jpg

All the non-reflective areas are the bumps that were knocked down.  I spent maybe 30 minutes on the whole frame.  This shot shows it best:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-024.jpg

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-025.jpg

Here is how it looks after wet sanding and one more coat of clear lacquer.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-026.jpg

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2012/Haro_Sport_9x-027.jpg

In the end it really made a difference on this frame.  Not sure I'll always do it but am glad I did here.  Next up, a few decals.
