Re: **Hawk bikes-Hawk Parts-Hawk Questions** Post them here

Ok....first I must say that I dont know a 100% that this is completely true information. Just retyping what I have gathered.

Hawk Bikes was started by a gentleman named Bill Paxton and his son Brian. Some where between 92 and 93 they hired Micheal Peters as a contract fabricator. Micheal and Bill had a falling out,and Micheal left Hawk bikes.

A year later,Micheal teamed up with Roy Little to start UFO bicycles. Roy little was the Wild Child team manager at the time they started UFO. Some say there is some Hawk features, and similarity to UFO bikes, and this is why.

In the late 90's,Hawk was sued and adventually had to close the doors. There are some who say the Hawk name was purchased by a mass production company, and were made until 2000ish. No definate light was shed on this, just hear say.

I do know based on year, there is gen1 and gen2 Hawks, and I guess there is supposed to be a gen3 Hawk out there. Judging by how rare a base Hawk is,im not sure ill ever see a gen3. I do plan to contact some of these sources, and hopefully locate Bill Paxton or his son to try and get some more history on Hawk.

The forks arent common due to failure issues, and bars are the golden gem I guess, but even more rare then the forks,,and no one can guarantee that Hawk even made bars. They are also rumored to be rattle traps. Due to the square tubing,u get alot of echo, etc when jumping. Ive never owned one,so I cant say.

Ive also learned the serial breakdown is supposed to be pretty simple like the midschool Elfs, and other brands.

So now my quest for info begins. Something about these brands that are mysterious intrigue me. No answerable history,no nothing. Like elf, theres little bits here and there, but thats it. Hopefully I can dig deeper, and get some answers. I will share it here,if/when I do.

Re: **Hawk bikes-Hawk Parts-Hawk Questions** Post them here

The inception of hawk was in 1990. The prototype hawk that was tested in bmxplus was just that a prototype, it was made similar to how a technique frame was made by welding two halves togther. It also sported a square seat tube with with a round insert for an actual seat post. Also the aluminum forks had bolt on dual drop outs. The test rider crashed hard an buckled the down tube. They redesigned for production.

They started building frames in 91. In 91 brian lopes was the first pro rider for hawk and he sported the newly redesigned first gen hawk frame. The first one still had the bolt on front dual drop outs. The first gen hawk frames had a lot of welding involved and they are the ones that had the big gusset plates at the front end. At that time they only came in red and blue with white forks. White decals on the frame and red decals on the forks all in the block font. Soon after production started they changed the bolt on dual fork drops to welded dual drops. Forks still had issues with breaking. The steerer tube was steel that was pressed into a piece of aluminum that the fork legs were welded to. They then drilled a hole through the pressfit piece and placed a steel pin in it. Still didnt help.

By 92 they had two sizes of 20" frames f-20 and f-20l and also started making pro cruisers the f-24. One other signature of the early hawk frames is the tapered rear chain stays. The hawks now were offered in candy red, candy blue, polished, and theres some that had polished rear triangles. Still had the block font decals but Ive seen white, grey, silver, yellow, neon yellow, and red. I think that theres a chance that there may have been a 24" aluminum dual drop fork in 92, but we will leave that up to lengend.

By 93 they added candy green to the color line up and were transitioning into new decals, the yellow bird graphic that most people know. The aluminum forks were still being offered and came in polished now. Though most people never bought them because of no reliability.

Somewhere in late 93 early 94 the fall out happened between the two parties mentioned above. The hawk frames were redesigned to the 3rd gen and be built much simpler. You can tell by the straight chain stays. Intruder only lasted a year or two my guess is that the welder created the company to get rid of the left over material he was stuck with after the split. When it was gone so was intruder.

The welder then went on to make intruder, which was the second gen hawk frame with up dated rear tapered stays. Instead of welding a long plate to box in the rear chain stays on the inside like the hawk frames, the intruder instead fully boxed and tapered the chain stay and seam welded the inside. thus there claim to being lighter and redesigned.

Hawks in 94 still had the 1" head tubes and accepted 7/8" seat posts, but they came in more sizes. they began to offer a full line starting at jr and and goin to pro xl, with three sizes of 24" also jr ex and pro. Still maintained the same 4 colors candy green red blue and polished. There were very very few forks made 1" threaded but now being made in full cromo and chrome plated, still sporting dual drops. There is a super rare 24" set on a cruiser in the museum. Also bolt on canti mounts started.

In 95 another update to the frames came in the form of a larger diameter seat tube to accept a 26.8 mm post I believe, and 1-1/8th threadless steerer tubes. They also updated the cromo dual drop fork to threadless too. Theres a hand full floating around still. In 95 hawk came out with another invention to fill in the size line up, the hawk mini suspension. It was a mini frame for the little guys that utilized a  single square tube that connected the headtube and bottom bracker, and the a bolt on alum chain stay only rear that featured a setup similar to a leaf spring on a car.

Hawk ended after 96, maybe for a law suit as mention before, but only bill paxton knows that. Somewhere in 95 and 96 the hawk FFL, or full frontal labotamy flatland frame came out, not sure on production but have only ever seen 4 surface. Also the decals came in purple as well as the yellow. And I think they may have added black and white in the last year. I cant confirm that though.

Ive never heard of any being made after 96. As far as a factory team goes moses tilman rode for them early on it 92-93 before he was sponsored by lowey axles. And in frank folisi left the bike shop I was riding for to ride for hawk and was the only factory rider that was listed. This can be confirmed in a 94 issue of bmx plus frame buyers guide. There were a few teams that were co-sponsored, just for the frames. The most rare hawk item in my opinion is padsets from around 92-93, more rare than forks.

Heres some pics I got stashed.
