A score to me, got my ZIPPO!

So, from this thread here,http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=315156 you know that I got an 88 Haro Master and am Resto-mod/survivoring it with my old school parts.

While working on that one, I have been thinking of picking up a second, as a rider, put my old school stuff into my personal museum. I'd seen some people who had build retro masters out of Zippos. Then as I was digging around last night, I found this thread http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=395296&p=1. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Well, the gods were smiling on me. Because right after that, I wandered over to Craigslist, and lo and behold:
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7069/6804712104_f1b1b773b2_z.jpg
You would call it a "Barn Find" if I actually had to go digging in the barn myself. Guy was clearing out some stuff on his parents farm and stumbled across it, right where he's dumped it 11 years ago when he got his license. The story is he had a Mongoose, all his friends had Mongeese, and he wanted something better. He worked his tail off on the farm, saved some money and got his parents to take him to the big bike shop in the city and he came home with that. He said it was 1997.

It is dead original. He didn't change anything but the valve caps.

Serial is ZOL9J3389. Not sure what that means, any mid school Haro Experts that can help a brother out I'd appreciate it. Is it a 97?

CAP bath is gonna get a workout, but it has good bones.

Spokes, Seat and rear tire are complete writeoffs

I kinda dig the Sprocket, Gonna put on 3 piece cranks, though.

Like I said, mega CAP bath. The nut on the front of the Bulldogs blew off somewhere between Columbus and Cincinnati.

Anyone ever powdered brake levers? Is it worth it?

So, there it is. It's gonna be a retro Master tribute. Going to go Neon Green. I'll have to re-lace the wheels with all new spokes, but almost everything else can and will be used.

Lots of us have repowdered levers. I guess it depends on the levers, whether or not its worth it.

I guess I should have been more specific.

If you repoweder them, how long does the paint last on the lever, or should I just go to bare metal and polish? This is going to be a rider, and I will be flatlanding a lot.

It all personal preference. Powder is tougher than paint but it will scuff, especially if you're dumping it constantly, as we all do when trying to perfect a trick.

Re: A score to me, got my ZIPPO!

So, work is under way. CAP Bath worked real well, but stupid me didn't take a picture before sending the F/F/B off to Chip. Oh well.

You can see what it did for the pegs, though:

As a refresher, here they were before:
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7068/6950823687_89285a0178_z.jpg

And those hubs?
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7251/7000510065_db18ea1d5f_z.jpg

Yeah, that'll do.

Here's the small parts I am using. Stem is way shinier in person
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7196/6854386980_f4d0777274_z.jpg

Still not crazy about the spokes, they cleaned up a little, but I am going to replace them I think. I have cranks on the way, so I only need a Blue Seat and pedals, then finish stripping the levers. I have blue tires coming from Porkchop.

And of course the frame, fork and bars to come back from Chip.

Mounted up, waiting...

Oh, and these had been sitting around in my office, from porkchop. Finally put 'em on the rim and out the door.
http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6036/7021999567_09e1f58103_z.jpg

Still waiting for a bag of spokes and nipples. Running out tonight to get some pedals, and I will be ready to go.

Which is good, because according to fedex, the frame/fork and bars are coming back tomorrow.

Yeah, I think it's the Revo that has twin top tubes but no U-brake mounts. I love U-brakes.

I was thinking of going with a newer set of flatland forks and putting them up front too. This'll do for now.

Thanks everyone. More pics tomorrow when the big box gets here.
