Dyed my GT Performer mags. Pics

Hello. I just thought this may be helpful to anyone trying to bring white wheels back to life. smile

When I got my 88 performer the wheels were downrite gross. They were brown and caked with brake rub all the way around. I don't have any immediate pictures. The ones you see were after I took them to work and sand blasted them at low pressure untill they were brake rub free and closer to a yellow color instead of brown. So the before pics here are after glassbead. Thats how bad these wheels were. I decided I couldn't settle for the yellow color and dyed them white with Automotive White interior dye. It used 1 whole can at $10. I cleaned them forst with CRC Carb cleaner before dying.

On to pics.

Re: Dyed my GT Performer mags. Pics

You guys may be right. I went to the Pep Boys and bought this stuff. In the store It fit the bill of what I was looking for. After I used it I put it out of my mind and just thought back to it as dye. I pulled the can back out and looked at it. It is Plastic specific paint. The way it lays on though just seems to absorb into the plastic like dye. I had to use the whole entire can up because it took several coats to cover. When it layed on thick and wet  10 minutes later it was dry and absorbed into the plastic.

The stuff is on there for life. I drove the bike around and the brakes did not rub it off at all. Even if it did over time there's white underneith anyway. these wheels side by side with Skyways look and feel identicle in texture and finish.

I think it was like $7.99 or something. I just wrote it off as a $10 can if I had to do it again. smile

Re: Dyed my GT Performer mags. Pics

I tried this on some mags and it worked great!  Paint doesn't come off when brakes are applied.  I will say it isn't a perfect finish and still has a slight spray paint feel to it.  So a perfect solution for a rider quality bike!  Can't beat the cost and how fast this can be done either!

Re: Dyed my GT Performer mags. Pics

There is a product called SEM vinyl and plastic dye. I purchase it from a fortunate to me, local NPD warehouse.(auto restoration parts and supplier) I've used to convert the interior of my 79' firebird from Tan to Black. Stuff works great. I'm going to try using it to freshen up my OGK Gt rims for my 87 Dyno d--tour I just started restoring. They are already black, just a tad bit faded for the age. This stuff should work just fine. It comes in a spray can. Is a lot thinner then paint and dries quick. They also sell both gloss and matte clearcoat as well. My vinyl seats and all trim in the firebird that was sprayed is holding up perfect smile
Will post before and after pics.
