DIY Proclass Rim Strips

Here is a super easy way to make proclass rim strips.

Supplies:

  • colored cellophane wrap (typically used for wrapping gift baskets) Wal-Mart and Hallmark sell this
  • silver metallic tape (typically used for HVAC work) Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Autozone sell this
  • sharp scissors

1. Roll the cellophane out on a flat surface such as  a table
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/3193/img1361af.jpg

2. Put the tape sticky side down on the cellophane
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/7963/img1362el.jpg

3. Trim the cellophane away from the tape.
4. Cut the strip in half long ways, and you have a set of pro class rim strips.

I hear ya brother...  I wasn't feeling the price for these things either. This cost me less than 10 bucks total, and took me about 30 minutes. Take some pics when you finish and post em here.

Re: DIY Proclass Rim Strips

There was a guy who posted in the Catchall recently where to get good quality (mylar I think it was) material for cheap.  Anyhow, whatever it was, it was very close to the original, and easy.

Of course there is also someone on here who makes and sells good quality ones as well.

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

Thermal count is rising, In perpetual writhing. The primordial ooze, And the sanity they lose. Awakened in the morning, To more air pollution warnings. Still we sleepwalk off to work, While our nervous systems jerk. Pretending not to notice, How history had forebode us. With the green house in effect, Our environment was wrecked. Now, I can only laugh, As I read our epitaph. We end our lives as moles, In the dark of DAWN PATROL

I made a set of blue ones and a set of red ones and both look awesome.  They also bubble up just a tad through the holes which also looks awesome.

Re: DIY Proclass Rim Strips

Yeah I used some ribbon type material from Hallmark and it was like $2. The material seems pretty tough too and doesn't scatch. Screw paying all that money. Best pic I got for now.

Re: DIY Proclass Rim Strips

I've used Christmas ribbon without issue, just used a regular rim strip behind it.

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd462/Johnnymaid/bikes%20and%20guitars/1982%20GT%20Pro%20Chrome/82gt007.jpg

Its fun to alternate colours too.

Re: DIY Proclass Rim Strips

That said, I am guessing one could use just a regular rubber rim strip if one was looking for the 'matte black' look.

Re: DIY Proclass Rim Strips

I found that black cellophane is not readily available, so I opted to use black ribbon (matte black). I laid the ribbon on the sticky side of HVAC tape and then when to work with the scissors. I think they look cool, and more importantly, if I get tired of the look I now know how to make them for less than $5 and in less than five minutes smile They wil look sweet on my current project cool
