1979 Mongoose Motomag
1979 Mongoose Motomag
This is the first restoration I got for my son Zac, built by DJ EFX
OK.. So I was told this is a 1979 frame , but has the wrong sticker set on it. It has a non era correct seat, but thts because my son finds this seat comfy, and lets face it, this was built as a rider, not a show bike. It has a weird serial number on the BB (pic included) I want to swap the frame out for a Roger Decoster frame, like the one I had as a kid.
The 70's... We had no knee pads, no over protective soccer moms, no mini vans, if you messed up it was actually your own fault, and we rocked out to 8 tracks, cassettes and vinyl. THAT'S HOW WE ROLLED!

Re: 1979 Mongoose Motomag
That serial number is really weird. It suggests to me that the bike is a 1981.
You might want to fix that huge bulge in your front tire before you ride that thing!
Still searching for my missing bikes from BITD. 1979 Blue Max serial: CI9 221346 and 1977 Webco serial: 42667. Big reward if found!!

Not the wrong sticker set but the mongoose sticker was placed on the down tube instead of the top tube. I think there might have been a motomag sticker on the downtube originally. All depends on the year of course. It is not newer that 1980 though or it would have the newer rear dropouts with the two holes in them I believe.

In the pic the tires had no air, so the tires were off set. I have other tires and tubes now.

Re: 1979 Mongoose Motomag
The welder of this frame must of been distracted or not very attentive to his work.
The BB hanger is serial numbered for an 81 like Scraplord says.
But yes, the rest of the frame is an 80 or older!
This is a sweet looking oddball serial numbered goose!
I'm looking for the following frames, frame & forks or completes by BMX products:
MotoTrac (nickle or chrome), Racer-X or a Super-X (with the double gussets).
Thanks

There is a story(news paper article) over at Vintage Mongoose about how these serial numbers were mixed up!

Re: 1979 Mongoose Motomag
It was after June of 81 that the newer drop outs were used. My son has an 81 from June and it has the old drop outs and My other son has a august of 81 with the newer drop outs. And you are correct about that Frame number. That is a June of 1981 frame. Sometime in 81 they dropped the C and just started with the month.
Looking for NOS KKT K-MX rat trap pedals in 1/2" chrome.
