1997 Haro Group 1 RSi

Resto-mod

**SOLD**
So my intention with this bike was to use at the track. I bought it in January '12, and it has been a project ever since. Instead of restoring a 1" clamp-on, eighteen year old frame to be a current race ride, I finally decided to give it the full Restoration / retro vibe. I always loved the 90's TT design of the Group 1 bikes, but the best of the best of the Group 1 family has got to be Pistol Pete's black '88. I had only ever seen one in person (owned by getmoney) and it's just such a beautiful design, I had to try to replicate it. Found this machine online in a semi-together state (wrecked freestyle 48's, cobbled-together chain, chopped bars) but otherwise in remarkably original condition. After looking through the museum, I think this is one of only a few examples of a mid-'90s era (1" clamp-on) RSi here. I would have stayed with the original paint and decals, but the '97 RSi decals are impossible to track down. I've never seen a set.

Re: 1997 Haro Group 1 RSi

SO... should I re-powder, or should I keep it OG? There's lots of scratches and rash, and some moderate decal-peeling. Also, has anybody ever seen decals for this model out there? I've never seen them.

Re: 1997 Haro Group 1 RSi

Man, I love the Group 1 chromoly bikes.  I got hit by a truck on mine in college and the frame/fork is toast.  Maybe I'll post a thread about it sometime.

Great long, low, fast bike, and the 1" threadless was an awesome setup.

Re: 1997 Haro Group 1 RSi

Alright, this frame has been staring at me for too long, daring me to do something. wink

So, I'm considering removing the paint to expose the raw 4130, and then clearing over the raw. There is a set of Blue downtube decals from the right era floating around that would match up nicely.

I know, it's only 'survivor' once, but the decals are thrashed, the paint is wrecked, with long, ugly scratches all over, and I'm not going to be satisfied with leaving it alone. Thoughts?

Re: 1997 Haro Group 1 RSi

OK, I'm doing it. I'd love some feedback on this idea, but ultimately, I think it'll look cool, and I'll be happier with the result than a beat-up, scratched old 'survivor.'

Call me crazy.

Re: 1997 Haro Group 1 RSi

Well, it took some time, but I'm getting there. smile There was a slow-down with paint, and eventually I just rattle-canned the grey myself (Thanks, Tremclad... not a bad job if I do say so myself. Not a perfect match either, but considering it's Tremclad "gray" I'm pretty happy.) Here's a quick mock-up pic.

Still lots to do -- none of the chrome has been cleaned, need new crank, wheels trued, thinking of redoing the survivor 1" clamp-on Fusion stem to more closely resemble a Group 1 stem (polished bottom, black top, polished 'Fusion' font) and still trying to decide what chainwheel to use: the OG '97 Haro disc it came with, or an oldschool uni-directional...

Re: 1997 Haro Group 1 RSi

More work happening... stem is off for stripping (base) and new powder (cap) to look more like a Group One stem. Also, '88 style Uni-directional spider / chainwheel is on the way. I tried the OG '97 44t, but I don't like it with the retro vibe finish.
