OAKLEY"S why all the hype

I was just leafing through a thread regarding OAKLEY"S reissued. Why bother? What made them so special to you? I here talk of guy's paying upwards of 200 dollars! Thats crazy to me. I'm 46 and have been into BMX since the early 70's so I have had many pairs over the years. IMO they were too soft, and attracted dirt so bad I was forced to wear gloves. You would look at your hands and they would be full of dirt rolls. IMO with the grips available today, I don't miss them. But might try some for 15 bucks or so thats it. Just like their overpriced glasses.

Re: OAKLEY"S why all the hype

Your above statement could be applied to almost ANYTHING that is coveted or collected in this or any  hobby.

People like what they like, and people don't what they don't.

It's all about preference and nostalgia.

As soon as someone starts questioning "why", then the magic starts to fade, in my opinion.

Re: OAKLEY"S why all the hype

I dont think the guys buying them are doing so for the usage aspect. They are trying to keep their bikes era correct and you just cant find OG B2s in black/blue or red as they were the mostly used colors back then and not many pairs survived. Grips are like brake pads on a car, worn out and replaced quickly.

Re: OAKLEY"S why all the hype

I liked the feel of B-2's, but AME's were a better overall grip, IMO.

I want to here from those who have paid upwards of nearly 200 dollars. I thought out of the box they were the softest grips I've ever felt.

Indeed, especially when NOS originals can still be had for less if you look. Reissues have been fetching more than OG here lately which boggles my mind. The last pair of Oakley B-1B I bought off ebay a few months ago, were NOS and cost me $88 while reissues on here seem to get $150 +. Crazy.

I did love and use Oakley B-2 a lot way back when, but they fetch crazy cash these days so I'll stick with $6 AME Tri grips on all my riders.

$200 for grips to finish off that restoration or show type build is no big deal. $200 on grips for a rider is a bit nutty, but whatever floats your boat.

And soft grips are a bad thing?

Why do people spend $200 on sunglasses when they can spend 5 bucks for a pair at a gas station?

Why do people spend $200 on jeans when K-mart sells them for 20 bucks?

Why do people give a shit what other people spend their money on? roll

It's nostalgia and people are willing to pay money for it to relive their good ol days. Nothing wrong with that wink

Personally I could care less what people spend their money on. The question is whats the hype? What makes them worth so much to indiividuals. Why do you need to worry about my thread? And who gives a shit what you think?

The same reason why people would give a shit what YOU think, bud.

You started this thread thinking people would give a shit what YOU think, right?

Just adding my opinion on an open forum. You do know how this all works, correct? You asked a question, I answered it. Not fault you don't like my answer. roll

By the way, I don't notice any more "hype" about Oakley than I do any other OS brand being resurrected or reissued.

Oakley grips were the ones to have BITD. They ruled the market. What was popular then, is popular now. Doesn't take a rocket scientist or a 1000 word essay to figure that out.

Re: OAKLEY"S why all the hype

I'd like one or 2 set of special grips for one of two of my bikes just for cool factor.

All my other bikes get AME's....  it's what I ran 95% of the time and they are cool too.

AME grips rule and you can still buy them just like the old ones! I rode AMe grips bitd and they were the best and on my builds I still like to use them....except one of my builds has the OG Grab-On grips whihc were cool bitd.

Good Points.

Which model is the most popular? What pair do you desire, if you do?

I liked 'em all, but the 3's were just dumb.

True on the 3's. They came out about the time all of us were in need of longer bars, and I would always find myself trying to hold onto the finned ends!lol

This.

Few brands that were so predominant back in the day have gone on to be huge successes like Oakley.  It's pretty much Oakley and maybe Vans.  There's something... cool about going back to a huge successes' humble beginnings.

I don't ride a BMX bike to look cool to others, I do it because it's fun and never do I think "Boy I sure am cool on my BMX bike."

Re: OAKLEY"S why all the hype

You can still buy brand new AME TRI grips, which I liked and also the Waffle grips are still available ....both brand new (repops if you will). None of these are expensive and have the old school closed ends!

I love fat grips.  The F-1 was always my choice.  I'd love to try them again but I will never spend the money on them.
