Old School Japan

Konnichiwa!!  I'm an old school BMXer from GB who is now based in Japan, so thought I'd post something specifically from the Land of the Rising Sun and the home of all those great names from bitd.

When I first moved to Japan 2 years ago I had dreams of finding an old, abandoned Kuwahara Laserlite!  Sadly, no such luck (yet!) though there are definitely some cool bikes around and about, often in the same areas as the vintage/retro/used clothing/memorabilia stores.  Here's a great example that I saw on a trip down to Fukuoka in Kyushu - a BMX Products Jag with Tange forks and z-rims - very cool

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/47558/fukuoka-jag-015960863f77.jpg

There are also a few bmx shops that stock old school bikes and parts, though at Japanese, ie. expensive prices (by US or European standards, that is).  In Tokyo there's W-BASE, Screamin' Wheels and Bonz Bros, all of which have their own style.  Here are a few more pics:-

& finally, here are some links to some photos I've already posted from an annual, old school meet in Tokyo:-

I'll try to keep this thread updated with what I see out and about! smile

Re: Old School Japan

Stumbled on this last weekend - didn't have time to stop and take a proper look but think it might be one of the 2002 reissues of the ET!  big_smile

Am thinking of going back this weekend to have a closer look and put a "Do you want to sell your bike?" note on it! wink

Re: Old School Japan

Yeah, they've certainly got the best location (roughly halfway between Shibuya and Harajuku in downtown Tokyo) and there's some lovely stuff in their shop, some of which is for sale, some not. They've also produced their own old school bike called The Roots - as pictured below...

https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/47558/w-base-how-i-roll-roots59608950a5.jpg

All that said, they're not my favourite shop! wink

I like Screamin' Wheels because they're really into their vintage stuff (old school bmx being only a part of what they stock, albeit a big part) and Inoue-san's a nice guy. W-BASE is an out-and-out bike shop and caters for old/mid/new school bmx as well as other bikes, so although there's some overlap between the 2 (namely, old school bmx), they're definitely aiming for different markets.  Horses for courses, and all that.

Re: Old School Japan

If anyone's in the neighbourhood, there's an old school bmx (and vintage cruisers/Stingrays) meet in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo next Monday, 30th April.  Hoping for some good weather as I'm planning to take my Haro along.  cool
