1988 or 1987? General RL Osborn Pro - BLACK

does anyone know which year did the Black Osborn Pro?  I thought it was 87 but I've seen 88's.  And how do I tell the difference?
http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/general/52002

My buddy and I couldnt' remember when he got it but we thought it was 1987  the seriel number is on the rear just below the rear drop out. Hard to read, will need to remove the rust to see it clearly.  Anyone know the series of numbers to determine the year?

just wondering so I can update the info in the museum.

Re: 1988 or 1987? General RL Osborn Pro - BLACK

It's got orignal Redline 401's, Hutch Western freestyle Stem and HP 48's Chrome not satin finish.   The seat tube has 2 clamps but havent removed to check it, but don't think its cracked.  I think he cracked his trickstar and when he bought this he put 2 on there to make sure he didn't crack it.  Front and rear Nippons 883 and 990.  Cracked Dyna Grabber (Skyway) seat.  Pretty much all from 87-88 years I think.

1987 has holes on each side of the gusset plate. 1988's has a solid gusset plate with no holes for brake cable. I thought they all came with peregrine cranks though, not redlines.

Re: 1988 or 1987? General RL Osborn Pro - BLACK

He swapped the peregrines for the redline cranks.  I told him to search his garage for the old parts.  He swapped the General bars for the Dyno also and the pegs for Oddysey.  Besides the rust, this is what I remembered it looked like when I moved away back in 1990. I called him and he said it was in the shed, drove over and we pumped up the tires and I rode it around and then had to have it.

Are you referring to holes like these?

The gusset plate connecting the down tube to the head tube. I don't see brake cable holes so I would say its an '88.

This picture you can see the hole for the cable, it is only used with a rotor not a gyro.  cool

Ah.  sorry wasn't sure what the Gusset was. smile  I think now you are referring to the downtube with the main decal. yes mine has the brake cable holders.

Not the holders, the actual gusset plate itself will have a hole for the brake cable to run through.  cool

Re: 1988 or 1987? General RL Osborn Pro - BLACK

I'll have to inspect it tonight.  Didnt' the 87's just have GENERAL written down on the front and the 88's have a odd looking sticker on the front?  this is the original sticker here on the bike I have.

http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g438/yahtoo123/General/photo3-6.jpg

anyone know where to get new stickers for the black frame?

These two sites have 87 sets. I haven't seen a 88 set yet. I bought the AJK's for the white one I posted. The ones at ultrahive are higher quality though. I bought my decals before ultrahive finished his first batch.  cool

Re: 1988 or 1987? General RL Osborn Pro - BLACK

Tonight I gave up on the redline rl20 restoration to work on the General.  I took it all apart and started working on the small stuff. Cranks, headset, stem.  My plan for now is to just clean it all up and then decide what needs professional work and what I can do.  I may just leave the paint the way it is since it's all original. And add decals to it as is.  The crank arms are cleaning up nice. So is the Hutch western stem.
I'll post pics tomorrow.  There is a LOT of rust. I need to get some CAP or Vinager. Anyone have advice on which is better?

Vinegar works fine but the others work better. I only use vinegar because I have kids and its safer. If safety isn't an issue use C.A.P. or Oxalic for sure.   cool

Re: 1988 or 1987? General RL Osborn Pro - BLACK

Lots of pics to show the start of this.  But I have a feeling this one is going to take a LONG time to get cleaned up.

Can someone confirm the rims are Peregrine 48's or something else?  I think they were the originals that came on the bike, but it was 25 years ago so I can't remember when my buddy got it.  However the Crank I think i have pinned down to being mine from my old RL20ii, if you go to my rebuild of the other bike you'll see my old RL20ii in the first set of pics (1985 model)  I think these cranks are/were mine back then.

Re: 1988 or 1987? General RL Osborn Pro - BLACK

The rear hub is the ACS RL EDGE freecoaster hub. The first ready-made freecoaster! DON'T strip the axle! Those rear axles are next to impossible to remove!!! Back in the day (when I had RL EDGE wheels) two different bike shops tried to replace the rear axle for me and couldn't get the old one out. sad

The rims don't look like ACS RL EDGE rims though. The RL EDGE rims were made by WEINMANN and had little rivets around the edges of the spoke holes.

Re: 1988 or 1987? General RL Osborn Pro - BLACK

Here goes the clean up.  This is going to take awhile since I have no time to work on it and I dont have a big enough tub and I'm doing it all by elbow greese and safe cleaners so I don't mess anything up.  So I grabbed some NEVRDULL and BARKEEPERS Friend and some rags and started scrubbing.

http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g438/yahtoo123/General/photo3-8.jpg
http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g438/yahtoo123/General/photo1-10.jpg
http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g438/yahtoo123/General/photo2-8-1.jpg

after about an hour it looked like this.  Just the bottom of the frame left to clean up.  the inside of the seat post wasn't too bad so I haven't done anything inside the frame and around the holes for the brakes seemed fine so I"ll probably just lightly scrub down in there with a soft wire brush  I did have to use a brass brush on the plate around the seat post and in the tight spots there as well.  the plate does have some pitting but not too bad. So far on the rest of the frame there are no chips or peeling of the chrome. One spot on the seat tube does look to be rubbed down a little bare, I'll try and take a pick of it sometime and post.

Some close ups of the rust on the rear and the pitting on the plate around the seat post.
The whole frame will need a good buff once I get the rust off. but I think it will shine up nice.

The clean-up is going nicely.
Those top tubes shined up great!

I love those 401 crank arms with the original turquoise decals too.
Keep up the good work.

Re: 1988 or 1987? General RL Osborn Pro - BLACK

A few more shots after starting to work on the back of the frame.

another picture of the plate at the seat from underneath.
http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g438/yahtoo123/General/photo1-12-1.jpg

starting to use the Barkeepers Friend on the back drop outs.  I'd say this stuff works great if you have the time to only work on sections at a time.  I'm sure an OA bath or Vinager is faster, but with 2 kids and a dog, I didn't want to chance it and plus my luck I'd forget it was in the bath and destroy it.

Looks awesome so far.  I'd advise against OA if you plan on keeping the original paint (which you should IMO).  It's only original once, and it looks in pretty good nick.

I can't say enough good things about ultrahive's decals.  Top quality.  Louis really does outstanding work.

Also, the wheels look like standard Araya 48s with an RL hub on the back.

THanks Gaijin. But no one carries the 1988 decals. only 87's.  And yes, I'm leaving the paint as is. if I do find decals, I may touch up where its been scratched to chrome, but no intention of stripping and repainting this one.  I only did the RL since it wasn't original anyway.

Re: 1988 or 1987? General RL Osborn Pro - BLACK

Thanks TJ.  Still not bike in the museum?   This one is a pain.  There is just so much rust.  I haven't even looked at the bars and forks.  Ill have to replace the bearings, they fell apart when i took them out.

Anyone know how to remove the Crank spindle? do I need a special tool to get that apart?  or is it as simple as just unscrewing the outter nut like on a 1 piece?
