1986 Dyno Compe II

The one that started it all!

Most of us remember the green 1986 Dyno Compe II from the pages of Freestylin' Magazine and BMX Plus, or as restored by Matt S. here in the museum.  (http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/dyno/10198 )
But those of us fortunate enough to actually get that bike remember it coming out of the box a little differently. (By then they were using the 1986 Performer bars and seat post which had the white and blue coin decal instead of the blue and red one. They also had white tires instead of black & no bar or frame pads.)
After doing a variety of odd jobs from the summer of 85 into the summer of 86, which included mowing grass, picking cherries, and recycling aluminum cans, I had saved the $350.00. Back then you could C.O.D. your bikes from the shops, so we called Rockville BMX and ordered the bike. After 3 weeks the UPS man arrived at my front door box in hand. At that moment it was the happiest day of my 14 years of life. My Dad put the Dyno together in our living room while the neighborhood kids tried to catch a peek through our house windows. So it's only fitting that this was one of my first restores, as posted here. I have also included a picture of my original Compe II. It is the one in the yard beside the hedges.
Update: Since the original posting I have updated a few detail parts to match the original as well like GT Seat Clamp, Dia-Compe Brake Pads, and 2169 Seat.
* A'me Round Grips
* Dia-Compe MX900 Brakes
* Dia-Compe Tech 4 Levers
* Dyno D-2 Brake Guard
* Dyno Seat
* GT Forkstands
* GT Framestands
* GT Mallet Stem
* GT Pedals
* GT Powerdisk
* GT Pro Performer Bars
* GT Pro Performer Mags
* GT Seat Post
* GT Tires
* SR Sakae 1 Piece Crank
* SR Sakae Chainwheel

Re: 1986 Dyno Compe II

I recently saw Matt's Compe II and these are stunning bikes.  Matt and I had to settle for '87 D'Tours back then (we grew up near each other).  Green is the color of the Freestyle heyday [pink just can't compare] and this one is a champion.

all i can use is.... S&M DTF 21.25 frame ;  28t Fit 24mm spline drive sprocket [without insert is fine]; 30t 22mm spline drive sprocket [Profile, Fly, Kink whatever];  a 2013 WTP atlas or cheap cro-mo 24" race bike ; 14" wheel scooter; 21.25"+ tt USA-made frames;

Re: 1986 Dyno Compe II

The things we had to do BITD to get what we wanted. I remember mowing lawns, thee ol' paper route, collecting bottles for 10cents and putting things on Lay-Away and having to wait. Kids today have absolutely no idea how easy they have it. GREAT LOOKIN' DYNO, smile

BEER, BABES, & BMX, what else does a man need? Well, maybe some BULLETS for his BERETTA 9 MILLA MEETA. lol

Re: 1986 Dyno Compe II

They are the GT Performer mags. I don't think they came out until 86' so I don't think they were stock if you had an 85'. All of the 85's I've seen had Skyway 6 spokes on them.
And thanks again for the compliments on the restore.

Re: 1986 Dyno Compe II

thanks for the info man. I dont have any pics from the bike anymore. I'll take yoru word they were tuff 2's. I 'think' i hada rare color combo.... white f/f, bars and seatpost, just abotu everything else was flourescent green. and it was def an 85, and i got hit by a car in early 86, while riding my Dyno, bent and cracked the frame and one of the mags, lol.

Re: 1986 Dyno Compe II

Instant fave.  Great story also.  You nailed that resto to a tee.  So, your's initially came with the pink bars?  and, bitd, these bikes did come with the GT stickers on it as well as the Dyno stickers?  I've only recently built my first Dyno and I'm starting to get schooled up on them.  Nice build.

No. Bike came out of the box with the white GT Bars. I bought the pink pretzel bars about 8 months later. The 86' Dyno Compe II's were practically identical to the 86' GT Pro Performer's, except for the frame, fork, and Dyno logo on the seat. In 87' Dyno added their own pretzel bars and drain-pipe to complete bikes. smile

Dude, you made my day.  You have argueably one of the hardest bikes to find today.  I still have mine, all original, in my garage.  I've googled time and time again to find one all white green and original like mine and NOTHING until yours has come close.  Great job on a truly extremely rare bike.

Re: 1986 Dyno Compe II

Hey Christian,where do you and like so many other members/freestyle bike enthusiast get the white GT freestyle tires? I see so many bikes on here that have them,but don't know where to get them. Is it a hunt,look for them sort of thing ?

A few years ago someone had a stash of the Vancoms and sold them on eBay. But since then I think the well has run dry. sad
Best bet is to put a WTB ad out and hope someone getting out of the hobby has a pair to sell.
