Re: Bassett Racing...let's see em!

Hey Ryan, there is an old photo of me racing for Bassett in one of the old magazines, I just can't remember which one.  I use to work at the Bassett factory in Orange (the one pictured in this thread) boxing headers during my racing years.  I even tested, rode, and broke in half the first ever Bassett 24 inch cruiser made.  It was a 24 inch custom front end with a Robinson 20 inch rear end modified a bit for a 24 inch wheel to fit.   I broke it in two pieces over the pro section at the last Corona Down Hill race.  Riding for Bassett was lots of fun and my buddy Dave hooked the deal up for me in the first place.  A couple of the bikes you showed were from his collection.  Sadly I don't have any of my old Bassetts anymore.  It would be nice to find an original black swooper frame and fork for my collection though.   If you know somebody who has one in good shape, let me know.  Woody.

Thanks for the history Woody!

I don't know of a Swooper at the moment, but I do have a NOS black 20" fork that I'll never use.

Re: Bassett Racing...let's see em!

Great thread.  Ryan, Thank you for all your hard work digging up those ads and magazine tests.  I SOOO distinctly remember the BMX Plus! 24" test with Denny Davidow.   Especially the "just drop the tailgate and take the drop!" photo.  How many of us went out and copied that move?  Anybody else find yourself going arse-over-teakettle?   Ha...harder than it looks.  I did pull it off successfully after my first fail, but man, I would be scared to try that move today.   No possible way I could accelerate my fat arse quickly enough to land it.

Again, mucho props to RyanPartridge, dropping Bassett knowledge.

This bike was sold on ebay a couple months back.  Wish I was the buyer, but I did not have the dough.

Hell yeah! Thanks for contributing! Those photos are great!

That black 26" cruiser that was on ebay was also for sale on CL several months back. I went to look at it but I didn't feel the price was right at the time so I passed.

I have a bunch of vintage waterski patches so they may all need to stick together on a gear bag or backpack. Haven't decided yet...

Re: Bassett Racing...let's see em!

Sold this one last year...I miss it. To honor the 1/4 mile drag boats that are often called 'Plastic Fantastics". I built her with as many "plastic" parts as I could find.

Re: Bassett Racing...let's see em!

Your Plastic Fantastic was a very sweet build.   I dig that you really executed your theme.   Maybe a yellow Uni seat and some yellow Hare pedals would have been about the only other parts that could have put more plastic on there.

Re: Bassett Racing...let's see em!

These are from Dave(bassetthound) direct from Ward Bassett's collection. Thanks Dave!smile

Check out those bars! Those Whizzers rule! Bars came in single clamp and double clamp versions.

Also...check out the fork options. The "standard fork" has Joe(805BASSETTBRO)'s style drops and lists it as 7/8" chromoly legs with a steel stem. The "R-TOO fork" has my style dropouts with 1" legs and full chromoly construction. So I guess one isn't the earlier version like I'd assumed, there were 2 options. Tons of good info here!
