Gary Ellis's 1998 GT Speed Series Team bike!!!

Hi all,

I live in Davis, CA which is home to the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame.  Since I had never been before, I decided to go to the HOF yesterday.  And, the first thing I saw was Gary Ellis's 1998 GT Speed Series Team bike!!!!!  I was blown away!!!  Gary was accepted into the USBHOF last year (2010), so his bike has been on display in Davis for the last few months!!!  I had no idea... even when I live less than a mile away!

Here are a few pictures that I took of the bike.  If there's interest, I can also post some more detailed pictures of the bike.

Good find. That thing looks awesome. It doesn't look too different than any bike you could get from a LBS or the one in the catalog.

I'm here to build bikes and ride 'em.

Wonder how long that top tube is, I think GT made some HUGE ones for Gary, the "other" GAry..
I hve a few of those Profile spacers,  black, with silver divots..just like the one shown.if someone else needs em, this would be a fun bike to duplicate!

SUPER COOL.  That guy was a class act.  I was at his last NBL Grands where he won by sweeping the mains.  It was a site to behold.

He was a bad@ss!! His rides were always so basic too. Always just rolled high end GT stuff and won with it. A LOT!!! Really classy guy, too. Saw him at a few nationals back in the nineties around here. He was always really cool to the little kids. Even saw him help a couple kids out with their bikes a couple times. big_smile

I got a chance to take a race clinic from Gary back in like 91 or 92. It was awesome to see him ride. Super nice guy as well.

Re: Gary Ellis's 1998 GT Speed Series Team bike!!!

I can see it has some pretty long cranks with the GT heman or bigman pedals,i don't know if you guys saw the jersey i sold a few months ago signed by him,it is down under now.Somehow i deleted the pics  from my camera, these are the only 2 i have left you can see a little bit of the autograph on the left upper next to the number one on the back, maybe the new owner will post a pic.http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae125/kingstinger/P1140315.jpghttp://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae125/kingstinger/P1140319.jpg

Re: Gary Ellis's 1998 GT Speed Series Team bike!!!

Hey guys, I don't know what the top tube length is on this (I'm guessing at least 21"), but the GT cranks are 185mm long.  Also, I looked for a serial number, but didn't see anything on the inside of the left rear dropout.  The bike had a tag on that said that Gary Ellis raced this bike between January and April of 1998; I'm guessing that it's one of the last bikes he raced.  The only thing I really couldn't get a picture of was the top of the seat, but I believe that it said "GT BMX", which makes it a 1997 seat.  Here are those detailed pics you asked for big_smile

Oh, and the address of the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame is:

303 3rd Street
Davis, California

If you're in Davis, CA, you should check out the USBHOF, there are lots of really cool bikes in there!

A one-off factory rider bike like that ain't gonna have a serial number.  It's a stand alone bad-ass racing machine.

Re: Gary Ellis's 1998 GT Speed Series Team bike!!!

I have some of those Shimano DX hubs that I was planning on using on a box series or pro series or pro series build. The only thing is is that mine are loose ball so I decided not too. After looking at his though they look like they are looseball as well. They have the same "domeish" shaped covers as mine. Am I wrong? Does anybody know anything about these hubs and if they are only loose ball or if they come in a sealed version as well?

I'm here to build bikes and ride 'em.

Re: Gary Ellis's 1998 GT Speed Series Team bike!!!

Does anyone remember a BMX Plus 2-page print of Ellis and Hoffman with a plane right above them?? This was probably 92-94 ish. I thought that was badass shot... two mid-school legends on the same shot!

OP, Thanks for sharing.. that is a piece of BMX history right there!
