1998 Technique Pro XL

AT LAST!  I found 1!!!!

4-24-11
Today was a good day.  I Finally got a Technique.  Been wanting 1 for years! this was actually my first choice of frame for my ultimate race bike build last year.  i lost 3 chances to get 1 so i went with the Powerlite Coqpit.  dont get me wrong i have no intention on taking the Powerlite apart to build this 1.  this frame needs a repolish not too bad but i know i can make it better.  the bike was complete but aside from what you see in the pics the other parts were junk.  sadly it had a walmart wheel in the rear would have been nice to have a set of technique hubs...... anyone have any technique hubs?  at least a rear 1 36h?  well my ELF DX3 will have to wait im polishing out this bad boy first.  1-16-22Official Parts List:* Frame: 1998 Technique Pro XL
* Fork: Hanebrink custom or prototype?
* Headset: Ritchey logic sealed.
* Stem: Technique
* Bars: Elf Blast Pro
* Cranks: Technique w/Technique Spider Crupi Chain Wheel and GT Alloy Sprocket Bolts
* Pedals: NOS JP rounds with ti spindles
* Rims: Kore Speedhoops
* Hubs: Technique
* Spokes: Dt swiss stainless
* Tires: Kenda tan wall
* Seat: S&M Thin Seat
* Post: Kore Elite
* Grips: Animal Edwin Dela Rosa w/Lizard Skins Donuts
* Brake Lever: Paul Love Lever
* Brake caliper: Paul Crosstop
* Brake pads: scott mathauser finned
* Cable: Shimano XTR Cable with odyssey slic cable housing
* Chain: Shadow Conspiracy V2 Half Link Silver
* Chain Tensioners: Crupi
WANTED:                       Any tripple clamp 20" fork (THE industries Bombshell etc)                       Technique Pedals                       Technique or PMC Sprocket Or anything cool with a 1" bore4-26-11The Tech cranks were missing 2 pinch bolts and the spindle bolts were not the right 1s also had the wrong sprocket bolt.  just picked up some brand new correct hardware and replaced all the pinch bolts and the spindle and sprocket bolts.4-27-11ok as it turns out the stem this bike came with was a technique.  at the time i did not know this it simply looked like a hammered up pile of junk.  it almost got tossed in the scrap bin lmao.  check out the comments on this 1 to see the before and after pics of how i restored it.5-4-11seems this project is coming together faster then i expected.  no i didnt get the impossible pedals yet but ill have this a complete ridable bike soon.  it will still be under construction tho i just didnt want to leave it in the corner unbuilt waiting for 1 or 2 key parts.5-14-11ok this is the fastest i ever put together a project of this caliber.  i guess thats due to me having most of the parts already before i even bought the frame.  i simply rounded up stuff in the garage a thought would be cool on this.only new parts i bought after starting this project was the tires disk brake kit minus the caliper, cable lizard skin stuff chain crank and pedal bearings.  total investment including new parts and stuff i already had was about $575 give or take a few bucks.  and yes i intend to ride this 1 so no lip on how high my headset spacer stack is ok lol.  this was a fun but short project feel free to comment on it or even fav it =)11-12-11I did alot of rethinking on this 1 and just didnt like this fork on this build. and i felt the tires looked too new school style.  so i tried an answer scythe which looked bad ass but i think i found a winner with this redline flight fork.  unless i can get an actual hanebrink in equal or better shape then this 1 ill stay with this 1.  also think i did good changing the fit FAF tan walls with the maxxis holy rollers.  im going to change out the banged up tioga lever for a new paul love lever soon.  1 day id like to get revcore or gt big man pedals.1-16-22  Ok did alot to this since i last updated. forks  lever brakes tires rims hubs pedals tensioners.  check out the updated pics last 2 are what it used to look like.5-1-22never thought id be able to improve it but i replaced the all black hanebrink fork with a much nicer 2 tone 1.

Re: 1998 Technique Pro XL

im not sure i will match the powerlite ever again i invested a ton in almost all new parts.  i think what ill do is make this a rider with almost all used but good condition parts.  the pk auburn and PL were built too nice and they ended up as carpet queens.  i dont have any concrete plans just yet but for sure its going to be a real clean rider and dont want another show bike.  any new parts will be things that are difficult to damage like headset bb etc.  a couple things i hope to get is a kastan uniblade simply cuz most the techs i see have triple clamp forks and when did you last see a tech with a uniblade.  and i always wanted 1.  would also like to see some hutch pedals on this 1.  or i might put the crupis on my pk on the tech then put the hutches on the pk.  ill put up a parts list when i become more sure of what ill use.

ok i thought about it.  no hutch pedals.  they are cool and rare sort of.  but what i really want for this build is to have as many ultra rare parts on it as possible so here goes.  technique disk brake and pedals uni blade fork regina hollow pin chain.  ill use hutches as a stand in unless i find 2nd gen revcore pedals with the R engraved into them.  since this is a 1 1/8 threadless frame ill get a king conversion hs for the blade.  other parts are still undecided possibly araya RB-17 sucks another member had a nos pair but back then i didnt need them :|  and ill stay with the tech cranks since they are original to this frame.  due to the rarity of these parts i dont expect to finish it the way i want it any time soon.  but as soon as i get a uniblade ill put stand in parts just to get it on the ground so i can ride it

Re: 1998 Technique Pro XL

Just send me back the Coqpit and transfer the parts. ;)  Congrats on finally getting yourself a Tech.  Should be another fun build.  Finding the Tech disk brake and pedals will be the easy part. :lol:

Re: 1998 Technique Pro XL

wow funny story.  when i got this bike it was complete but with alot of junk filler parts.  i had it at the shop took it apart and set all the other junk parts aside to do whatever with.  while sorting out parts to junk things we dont need my dad picks up the stem that i took off the tech and says whats this anything good?  i said na not really he asks should we scrap it?  i said na maybe get a few bucks for it.  well just now i was sifting through some posts and saw a thread on tech stuff and turns out its a technique stem!!!  holy rusted metal batman it almost got scraped or sold.  well needless to say im keeping it now :lol: sadly it has hammer marks that ill have to take out.  dont you hate when awesome stuff ends up in the hands of idiots that dont know how to work on bikes.

Re: 1998 Technique Pro XL

Tech stem!  Lucky dog!  :cool:

  The Technique stems look similar to the 1 1/8" front load Brand X stems from the same time period.  I'll post a pic of a Brand X on the thread later today.

Re: 1998 Technique Pro XL

if i use a threadless fork as my stand in i can use my tech stem on it but first i need to remove these hammer marks then polish it.

Re: 1998 Technique Pro XL

What a great score.  Most of those hammer marks will sand and polish out.  Have fun w/ the polishing and build.

  Here is a pic of a 1 1/8" Brand X stem.  Similar in design.  This is a great alternative stem to use on Technique.  Problem is there pretty rare also.

Re: 1998 Technique Pro XL

ok its not a show shine but keep in mind it looked like a train wreck before as you can see from the pic i posted above.  i might try again to remove the scratches on the side but the deep 1 on top i might leave it alone.  dont want to remove anymore metal.  also it is shinier then the pic lets on the lighting and angle doesnt show it off well.

Re: 1998 Technique Pro XL

well i been thinking.  and a bit of a dilema.  i kinda want to build this up with a uniblade simply cuz i have this sickness for that fork lol but thinking logically the fork is skinny wheres the frame is bulky.  probably why everyone puts a hanebrink on them  :rolleyes: and if i use the uniblade i cant use the tech stem without a ghetto adapter.  and the more i look at the techs with hanes on them the more i dont care that its been done a lot i simply like it.  so do i persure my holy grail uniblade and build something different or go with something i know will look awesome and be able to use all my tech pieces.......oh well i have plenty of time to debate this.

Go with what you want, if you think that the uniblade wouldn't look right then use what you want....like a Risen fork ;) :lol:

Re: 1998 Technique Pro XL

There's always other triple clamp forks to use like the RL Flight, THE Industries and Bombshell.  I agree the triple clamps just go hand in hand w/ the Tech frames.  I think the uni blade would look very small on this frame.
