Re: 1987 Redline RL-20II

crowe-t,

Awesome!  I love your hazard yellow build...it looks almost exactly like the Original.  I can see where your newly chromed/p-coated frame is slightly darker - once all is said and done, your newly assembled hazard yellow bike will be one of the nicest I've ever seen.  Also, what color are you thinking about re-doing your '85?

Re: 1987 Redline RL-20II

kmpap,

Thanks again!  Most of the parts from the 86 Hazard Yellow will go on the 85 I just had re-done.  If you saw the 86 in person you would see that the color is too yellow.  The 85 I just had powdered has the orange-ish tint in the color and looks Hazard Yellow.  Also it is the correct year for the Hazard Yellow color.  I'm thinking of re-doing the 86 in either Turquoise or Radberry.

Can you post some pictures of your other RL's.  I'd love to see them.  Your Cali Red 87 RL20II looks outstanding so I figure your others must look real nice too.

Re: 1987 Redline RL-20II

Gotcha crowe-t,

I was getting your 85s and 86s confused. ;-)  Can't wait to see the NEW hazard yellow complete.  And the Cali red RL20.  AND your new 86!  When I was a kid I had a radberry with black bb hanger - I loved it, but I once sold away a NOS '86 Turq. RL20 with black bb and boy that sure was beautiful, too.  Please post pics once it's underway...

I'd love to post a few more images of my Redlines - thanks for asking.  I'm real happy to have found other members who love them as much as I do.  May take a few days, but I'll get them up here...

Bikes like these, the Masters and the PFTs could be seen in 1992 on TV here in Greece. (and only....lol)
Some of the 1986-89 teams' shows were on the national channel every saturday as i can remember wink

My favorite bike of all time. My dream bike back in the day! I can see why you dont ride it, though a hang five down the street would feel dam good on that bike.  Awesome build!

Re: 1987 Redline RL-20II

Great looking bike. I am having a turquoise R.L. 20 II painted by C-4 right now. I do really think the clean, elite look of the 22 is and was the best looking bike ever. The best riding bike I had was a 88 Master, but for looks, you can't beat your red 22. Todays bikes seem so bulky, plain and identical to every other bike out there.

Nice work.

Re: 1987 Redline RL-20II

Thanks Glenn - I appreciate your kind words and what you wrote.

I agree - the '80s were a very special time in terms of bike design and personality.  Some VERY unique stuff came out of that era.  First Generation thinking and execution.  I think the RL-20II was one of the finest examples from that period.

Can't wait to see your turq. bike.  Please post pics once you get it back from C4!

Re: 1987 Redline RL-20II

That's pretty nice. I immediately recognized it as being a replica of RLs red bike. The RL Edge tires were later than that though, but no big deal.

I remember reading in a BMX Plus buyers guide that RL shaved down the head tupe and headset cups, cut the fork and shaved down the top nut of his headset to get the front end lower. It's funny the things you remember 20+ years later.

Thanks Wrekd.  Most appreciated.  And your right - the RL Edge tires are out of place, as are the Tech 99 locking levers. I think the brakes are "wrong" too - he was running 880s/901s...I have Panaracers for this bike, as well as a pair of chrome Tech 4s and a silver 880/901 set-up, but I'm just too lazy to change 'em (lol).

I also remember reading something about R.L. trying to reduce the overall height of his front end - and I also remember (oddly enough) that he sanded down his seat to make it less slippery in those OS riding pants....fun stuff, those details we remember.

Here is a scan of RL's set-up of his Chrome RL20II from '86.

Re: 1987 Redline RL-20II

Yes, that's the artcle. I recall him shaving the frame and cutting the headset cups, but maybe that's my imagination because my info. came from this article alone. I studied these magazines so much. That looks like it is a chrome frame - I think this was after the red one.

It seems you are like me, I still have all my BMX magazines. I haven't looked at them in years though. Thanks for the memories.

Re: 1987 Redline RL-20II

What I liked most was that RL had the decal with the white lettering on the frame.  I like the red lettering on the white frames but never liked it much on the chrome.
