Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

Doing my Original 1987 White SKYWAY TUFF MAGS this weekend, will post pics.
Hope all comes out well. I can't find these originals at a reasonable price, so i purchased new axles and am going to give this a shot.

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

My pics will have to wait, when I started cleaning the mags with Simple Green, I noticed the D-BAG that sold the bike to me painted them. So I am now slowly stripping the paint away. It took some time to find a stripper that was labeled to be used on plastic, and it works great.
The stripper is called Motsenbocker's LIFT OFF Spray Paint & Graffiti Remover, its water based and biodegradable.

Citris strip works great for painted mags with no issues.

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

Finally finished one mag, have a little more paint to get off of other and then soak in bleach. I soaked front one for 2 days, and then stuck it right in cold water, but when I took it out of the cold water, there was white foamy stuff all over, so I just wiped it down thoroughly with a towel. I didn't use WD40 like suggested.

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

Do you have to do one wheel at a time ? And if so do I need to do the process all over again with new dye and new water or re-use the exiting water in the bucket ? Thanks (8

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

Here is how I do it.   I didnt even bother to take apart first.  I figured the hub is sealed.  Guess I am just being lazy!  This mixture used two packages of RIT dye and one bottle.  I did not use salt because my wheels were already blue.

Heres my before pic

http://i580.photobucket.com/albums/ss248/kisskrazyjim/BMX/20140627_121532_zps7f807c0c.jpg

Keep that grill going to keep that water hot

http://i580.photobucket.com/albums/ss248/kisskrazyjim/BMX/20140627_122022_zpsf3d1688e.jpg

Here is a sample of what you can expect during the process.

http://i580.photobucket.com/albums/ss248/kisskrazyjim/BMX/20140627_130305_zpsf5648f80.jpg

My only suggestion is to check your wheels frequently.  Mine came out a bit darker than I wanted.  Will post the after pics once I shoot them.  They are already on a build and even though they turned out dark, they look great.  BTW, I also tried dyeing a seat but the plastic did not take ANY of the dye.

Best part, when youre done, your ready to cook that pig!

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

Just started dying my og skyway tuff 1 pat. No. 244272 wheels using advice from this forumn changed one thing. Bleached then dishwashed after scrubbing and cleaning as much as possible. Anyways took straight from dishwasher to dye as to get the wheel warm and open pores. As I'm sure others have done before and after pics when finished dying, but already looking 100% better so thanks everybody for techniques.

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

For white tuffs  I use 1 gallon bleach in tub fill rest with water, and wait 24hrs. I had shot with a car wash wand first .
