Wow SuperKav I saw your post on this on vintage,os or rad years ago and this is the method I followed when I did my first set of mags. Guys remember though, it is hard to find dylon dye in the states. Grab the liquid rit dye as an alternative. Works better than the powder and can be found everywhere.

Hi mate do you still have to add the salt with the RIT liquid dye?

No you can only go darker. Or the same color to re enhance  the origianal color if they are faded.  I did this peregrine master mag that someone spray painted. I media blasted it, and bleached it and couldn't get all the paint out. Its like it dyed the rim slightly. So i dyed it red and it looks almost new!!

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

I added salt to my dye job using the Rit liquid.

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

I have a set of first gen sw tuffs that were rattle can'ed (spray painted).  They are original yellow.  What's the safest way to strip the paint first before I do the bleaching/dying?

Thanks,
Roy

Soaking in brake fluid will remove spray paint and not hurt the plastic.

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

seems paint stripper is the way to go (cheaper), there's a spray version that's water cleanup...i want to go gentle so maybe that will work after a few rounds.  i would rather use brake fluid, but how would I fill my trash can high enough to submerge two wheels in brake fluid w/o braking the bank?

thanks,
roy

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

Lowes carries a 20 gallon bucket with rope handles in the storage department, a Skyway fits perfect in the bottom with about 1/8" wiggle room.  I used that and 3 - 3 qt containers of bleach (they were out of the larger size) but needed to top off with about 1.5 cups of water to get it over the hub area.  The bucket is $8.

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

I have a set of old faded blue skyways that really are great just faded. I want to go black with these. It seems this would be pretty easy to do the color change. am I correct ?

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

I think that you can dye any color black.

Dont want to state the bleeding obvious, but have you thought about getting black tuffs and not dying blue ones...they are getting harder and harder to find now....just saying. hmm

Re: Restoring Skyway Tuff wheels (bleaching and dyeing)

I wouldn't do it. If they were white z's then maybe. You need to work with a white base to change colors , unless you were doing black. I tried to dye a lavender peregrine mag red and it came out burgundy.
