Stuck chainring bolts..

How do you guys hold the back of a tight chainring bolt?  I have a few stuck and I cant get a hold of the back with pliers.. Anyone have a trick? Im at the point where I feel like just drilling the damn things out of there.

Re: Stuck chainring bolts..

if you don't care about the bolts...i have used a screw driver in one of the two slots in the back and used a allen key on the front after i lubed them up with some penetrating oil.  smile

good luck!!!  big_smile

Re: Stuck chainring bolts..

Im getting one of those tools too! Tired of stuck chainring bolts and banging up my hand or running sprocket teeth through my finger. Don't laugh, I did that, have the scar to prove it.

If you send me a lowball offer do not expect a reply. I am sorry the free shipping fairies are on strike and it cost money to ship items now. Please consider that before making an offer.

Re: Stuck chainring bolts..

I'm working on my personal survivor '85 Sport so I want to be as careful as possible with the OG parts..  Id rather clean them up nice than replacing scratched up chainrings...etc..

Re: Stuck chainring bolts..

Ice tools ( Lifu ) make a tool like a screwdriver with an end to fit both slots at the back of chainring bolts. Designed to be safer.

Needle nose pliers, will spread and fit on each side of the flat head slots. I do it all the time.

Re: Stuck chainring bolts..

I have used small vice grips with success. Nothing beats the right tool though.
