Decided to go grab my old bikes
Hey..kinda new to the site. Been reading (lurking) here for a couple months.
Anyway, today was D-Day for me and my old rides. I finally made my way over to my parents old home today in order to reclaim my bikes. It's been over 20 years since I've touched these. The years have not been kind to my old rides as you'll see below. All of these were packed away in a wooden shed back in 1990 or so. The wooden floor of the shed gave way some years ago and exposed the bikes to the elements. I packed up as much as I could find into my car and headed back home.
Bike #1 is the last 20"er I rode, a 1987 Schwinn Predator Free From Pro. I had asked for this as a x-mas gift primarily because the local Schwinn shop was basically giving these away at about $100 a pop.
This one was in the best shape of the bunch today. Only major rust victim here appears to be the freewheel on the 48's and the seat is cracked from a 2x4 that was laying on top of it. I'm still wondering if or how to restore this bike given its "black shadow chrome" finish which has a few scratches and blemishes from some heavy flatlanding use BITD.
I didn't expect to see this one, but this was my old race bike. I only found the frame today, the forks have yet to be located. I think this is a 83-84 Hutch "Pro-Racer", I don't remember. Hopefully somebody can positively ID this one.
Quite a bit of rust, but not as bad as I had imagined.
Now this one was the reason I made the journey to Mom & Dad's, My 1986 Haro Sport. God bless State Farm Insurance for buying this for me when my 85 FST got ran over by a car (long story). Unfortunately, my old Sport has most definitely seen better days...
Ugh. Is it Haro, a GT, an Ozone? I used every inch of this bike and it shows. The only original things left on this one are the Frame, forks, and pedals.
Itson bars, GT stem, a Schwinn Yo! seat, and the rust...
How do you get rid of rust like this?
I did manage to find the stock handlebars but couldn't find the original Haro chainwheel or the green, Group 1 stem anywhere. I did find the original Peregrine wheels that were on the Sport. Unfortunatly they look as bad as the rest of the bike.
Anyway, it was good to get back to my roots today. Hoping to get back to 'em even more given my new "projects" I now have.
I'm in NC btw. High Point, NC to be exact.

Mailbox full in 3-2-1. Don't let that Hutch go for pennies. The sharks around here will try to grab that from you. Oh, you need to go find the forks for it!

Re: Decided to go grab my old bikes
That Hutch is a HIGHLY desired "Holy Grail" around here. BIG $$$ just for that frame, also, if your looking to replace that pink Yo rock N' Roll seat, one poped up on the for sale section this week. 65 bucks.

Re: Decided to go grab my old bikes
Barkzine, you joined yesterday and your pm box is probably close to getting full. That Hutch is nice, definately a keeper (understatement of the week). Hell, all of them are keepers since they were your child hood bikes and they are perfect for restoration projects. If there are more parts at your parents' place, I would go try and find them. As Capn_Crunch said, you need to find the Hutch forks if you can. Very nice!

Re: Decided to go grab my old bikes
Stories like this are why I like coming to this site, this stuff actually still does happen. Most parents shite canned any bikes left behind by kids who moved away. Glad that they were still waiting where you left them.

Part and sell the others, build the Hutch! Don't let it go if you do not have to, it will only become more valuable.

Re: Decided to go grab my old bikes
is that "special k" named after kevin collins?
i remember a kevin collins who went by "special k" when i raced( he was in my younger brothers class)
and i remember correctly, he got picked up by a major sponser.
is this possibly the same special k from my local tracks b.i.t.d ?
never mind..just googled it, pretty cool it is the same kevin collins i remember being in my brothers class.
cool stuff from your younger days for sure!

Re: Decided to go grab my old bikes
Thanks for the replies and the advice.
I had no idea about the Hutch being so rare. We bought the complete bike used back in 1986 for like $35, IIRC. I raced it a couple of times at Tanglewood BMX in Clemmons, NC but retired it when Dad recommended we get a new Schwinn Predator Black Shadow for racing.
I've been tinkering with the bikes in the garage all morning. It feels good to get back into this.

Re: Decided to go grab my old bikes
Your Hutch is a grail for a lot of collectors. This site has a lot of useful info on restoring it properly and it could really be a centerpiece in your collection. Take your time and spend some $$$ and you will feel like a kid all over again.
Welcome back to your childhood.
