1982 Kuwahara Apollo

**SOLD** Originally lower end and somewhat rare, but a cool Kuwahara project none the less

I found this black frame without decals in a pile of scrap iron. Knowing only that it was an early 80's BMX frame is salvaged it. After hours of investigating I was able to conclude with relative confidence that it was an 82 Kuwahara Apollo based on the "82" serial# and the unique 3 hole gusset. Light sanding of the frame revealed faded paint showing "Kuwahara" where the decals once were which confirmed the make. The bike will be temporarily completed with close to original parts as I am eager to get this rideable with orignial parts incorporated as I get them.

Re: 1982 Kuwahara Apollo

Thanks, I am pretty excited for it myself. I have since found the identical matching 24" which I may pursue as a 2nd project which would make a pretty sweet pair!!!

Re: 1982 Kuwahara Apollo

Are you sure its not an American Flyer frame, it also has the unique 3 hole gusset, along with all the other gussets. Did it have a head tub badge?

looking for first gen bullseye pedals, reissued OK, or Bob Reedy 2007 reissued pedals by helix.

100% sure, not to dismiss that there could have been identical frames made for different companies. A light sanding revealed where the Kuwahara decals were. Although the decals weren't present they did adhere differently where the actual printing was making it visible. Apollos were imported and distributed by Fred Deeley Cycle in Vancouver and thus many of these made their way out to the Calgary area. There not abundant but they are not uncommon either, I've seen a few locally.

Re: 1982 Kuwahara Apollo

Some of the Apollos in the museum have a Apollo head tub badge, others have a american flyer badge, and some have no badge. I think the ones with an apollo badge are really Apollow, the ones with an american flyer badge would be an american flyer frame. The ones with no badge were ether lost over the years, or taken off, and it is now unclear if it was an apollow or american flyer frame. I have been told that both frames are made by Kuwahara and are the same, but if you look, the head tub badge is different. I see three different apollows in the museum, ones with an apollow badges, ones with american flyer badges, and ones with no badge. I see allot of apollows in the museum, but only one american flyer frame in the museum, even though about 1/2 of the apollow in the museum have american flyer badges or no badge. About only two of the apollows in the museum have apollow badges. But just the fact that some have apollow badges make me think all the apollows had apollow badges, unless they had different gens of the apollow frame, but I don't see that likely due to the apollow being a lower end bike:/hmm

Re: 1982 Kuwahara Apollo

Back in the day, most people would chisel off the Apollo badge and replace it with a Factory Kuwahara decal.  I actually had one of the first KZ 1 Kuwaharas that was brought in by Fred Dealy and it had an Appollo badge on the head tube.
