1986 CW Racing California FreeStyle
1986 CW Racing California FreeStyle
An almost completely original classic from the mid-80's.
First, this beauty is not mine, it's my brother-in-law's. The idea to restore it came as a result of buying a first bike for Christmas for my niece - his daughter. Turns out the bike we got her had the same exact color scheme - baby blue frame, white components, lime green rims, seat, grips. The similarity was ridiculous. So, my wife, her sister and I thought it would be pretty cool if daddy and daughter could ride together on their larger and smaller versions of each others bike.
Under cover of darkness, and with the aid of an accomplice (you know who you are), I 'stole' the bike from my mother-in-law's garage, took it home and began to do a 'quick' restore. Given more time, I would have done powder and searched for new decals.
This bike had 25 years of grease, grit and grime on it. The mags were practically black, pretty sure there was something living in the head tube ...I regret not taking 'before' pictures.
Everything on the bike is original except: chain, chain ring bolts, grips, tires, tubes, brake pads, cables & housings, pedals, seat post, seat post clamp bolt, and axle nuts.
Hope you like it, JP! Enjoy the rides with the lil' pea!

Let me be the first to say that your brother-in-law has a killer ride there and I am happy to hear you did NOT refinish it. I dig the color combo. It's only original once and it looks to be in nice shape. Screams 80's freestyle. Don't let anyone ever talk him out of that seat either.
Some things worth noting are, it is a 1986 model since it has the screw in pegs on the rear and the caps aren't welded in on the standing platform. Also, I'd get rid of the dirt tires and rock some freestyle tread. Otherwise, great job. I'm sure he'll be stoked.

Re: 1986 CW Racing California FreeStyle
Thanks for the compliments, guys!
Cb, I dig the color combo too (totally '80's) and thanks for the info on the year. I wasn't really sure what year it is (I'm not a CW, or a freestyle guy). My wife thought he got the bike in '85, and the stamps on the brakes are '85. I'll make the correction. As for the tires, the originals (which were dry-rotted & worn down to nothing), were CW with the CW tread. They were awesome. I went with the traditional BMX tread because it was the most retro, and similar to the original, deep CW tread. I was real close to pulling the trigger on some Kendas. If anyone ever knows where I can get a set of white CW tires, please give me a shout.
Thanks again for the kind words.

Sweet CW Marcus!
You did a great job getting this one together! Looks classic !
Looks amazing... That Green CW seat Really ties everything together... and those Pads!!!
The OG paint looks great too.
A nice substitute to the CW tread tires would be older GT tires.
They always looked similar to me. and they're sort of a deeper race/ freestyle hybrid tread pattern.
Great work!
Waiting for your brother Wesley? No, you blimp — I'm meditating...

Re: 1986 CW Racing California FreeStyle
Any chance he is selling it now?
I had the same bike and my dad sold it when I went off to college. The only thing I have left of it are the handle bars and green wheels. I was hoping he remembered who he sold it to. No luck. I ask him every year. haha!
My plan was to find it and restore it and give it to my son and teach my old tricks!
Cheers
