how to strip a frame

a member here asked how to strip paint/powder from his frame! so i told him how i do it and he does not have  pressure washer/air tools ect... so im gonna hold off what im working on and do my f/f/bars now and  show how to do the old poor boy way! here we go!

this has really nice og paint but is not my vision!

i use aircraft stripper or any gel type paint stripper! and a old paint brush! WEAR GLOVES!

sound like bacon!!
then i scrap off what i can and wash off with water and coarse steel wool. you can  reapply untill you get it all! but sometimes you have nooks and crannies/welds/ serial #s/ stamps that can be hard to get! this works good! small wire wheel on a drill! WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!

then i scuff the heck out of it  with 220 grit sand paper paying close attention around all edges/drop outs/ seat mast/and where cups go now your ready for paint!

Re: how to strip a frame

Great post!  I just wish it went as fast as you can read that.  Stripping paint has to be my least favorite activity during tear-down.

Do I smell freestyle build off material here... wink

Re: how to strip a frame

As a auto painter air crafter stripper is the best, but to save alot of time and the tool.Get you some plastic lay the frame on it than pour the stripper onto the frame than wrap it up so the stripper doesnt dry than you wont need a tool.15 mins later the paint will come off so easy and dont need any tools.I just did this with my powdercoated over chrome boss frame and many other frames

Re: how to strip a frame

Circa 1850 works well. It makes the paint "Snap, Crackle and Pop" like Rice Krispies...

Re: how to strip a frame

Can you use this method on the chrome frames without damaging the chrome with the aircraft stripper?

Re: how to strip a frame

oldschuulbmxer, can i apply these same tips on an aluminum frame? Particularly the coarse steel wool? A plastic scraper was suggested instead of a metal scraper & better yet hosing down. Just wanna know all my options. I think bitd as an unknowledgable teen i just used rags to wipe off the bubbling paint.

What do you think about Peel Away? It's odorless & water based. Is it still strong enough to strip the paint?

Thank you
