Can't say that I remember those....  Guess it makes sense though, if your'e going to make a knock off, why not go all the way.

Either way, thanks for helping dig another lost childhood memory out of my cranium.

Re: VANS thread. Who else loves them?

I got my first pair of checkerboard slip ons in 1982 and I currently have 9 pairs.  Vans are the best!

I went to an Army/Navy store in NYC years back and found shelves full of old Vans still in the original boxes. I wasn't into the old checker pattern slip-on back then but now I wish I had purchased a few pairs. hmm

Re: VANS thread. Who else loves them?

i have dozens of Vans, as well.  the only complaint i have about them is their department store versions that are low budget "skate style" shoes that have all the look but none of the quality which has really hurt their image with the older "just getting back into it" crowd.  i have heard it from a bunch of people that see them in my shop and tell me how much they used to like them but bought some new ones (usually at Kohls) and complain that the new version doesn't hold up as well as they used to.  i have to tell them that there is a reason they sell for $25 and remind them of the old "if it seems too good to be true..." philosophy.

Re: VANS thread. Who else loves them?

I don't collect them, but I do wear them. Usually until they are falling apart and my wife makes me throw them away smile . Right now I have black slip ons and low black tie on ones. The slip ons are almost due for the garbage though.

Re: VANS thread. Who else loves them?

I bought my first pair of Vans in 1978 at the time that Cheap Trick released "Live at Budakon". Being a skater and an impressionable kid I just had to have a pair of those shoes that Rick Nielsen was wearing. I used to drag my left toe quite a bit skating and destroyed a few pairs in short order, but still loved them.
Here is a video from from a surfing blog that I check out showing how they started and overcame early production problems.

Re: VANS thread. Who else loves them?

The ONLY sneaker for BMX. I'm trying to find the ones I had as a kid. They were red check lace-ups, had the lace weaved around the outside heel and had the red check around the rubber sole also. Can't find that kind now.

Old-school classic slip-ons in checkerboard -- I've probably been through six pairs in various colors over the last few years.  I don't ride in anything else!

Re: VANS thread. Who else loves them?

These black and yellow ones are sick! They are making me want to get some fresh ones right now. I love the feel of new sneakers! I had to shop at the discount stores when I was a kid and I only had a new pair when school started in September. So I always loved putting on kicks right out of the box.

Re: VANS thread. Who else loves them?

I wear Vans almost every day.  I am however looking for a shoe with a stiffer sole and more padding.  I think I cracked a bone in my foot riding in my Half Cabs. I jumped down a flight of stairs and felt a sharp pain across the ball of my right foot just where it hangs over the edge of the pedal.  I haven't been able to walk pain free for about month.

My heals have both taken a beating from wearing Vans while riding.  I should probably stop landing so hard on my feet.  tongue

Re: VANS thread. Who else loves them?

I remember one the local vans stores you could place an order for custom shoes. pretty much any color, pattern and sole in any combo you wanted.... My sister would get them all pink and girly not sure exactlyl what I got, something checkered with cross bones I think..that was in maybe 82-83.. I do have and ride newer black seuade high tops but everyone wears vans and converse so I mostly wear classic low top VSW just to be different..

Anyone know where to get Vans style checkered canvas? I asked Vans and they said they don't sell it.

Found a brand new pair of Van Doren basketball shoes (chuck T. knock offs) at the thrift store. Brand new, never worn. What are the odds?

lol

Ive used vans for years, had all kinds. High tops, low tops, mids, canvas, eather, suede, Iron Maidens, KISS, SLayer, old school, new school, no schools, flip flops, snow board boots, and after snow board boots. They used to make some realy cool cross country runners too, so Ive even ran hills in them. Ive used them for riding, skating, driving, surfing, flying, and SCUBA diving as well as just keeping my feet warm and dry.

In my opinion they are the best surf and dive booty that you can buy. When surfing big waves in regular booties, the steepness of the wave itself has caused my foot to slip in side the booty causing me to take some pretty bad wipeouts in otherwise perfect conditions. Since the switch to vans, that doesnt happen no more, and I have more grip. And for Scuba they offer alot of support to my bad feet. Plus I ike how they look compared to regular dive bootys.

After foot & ankle surgery(30 of em.) sad they helped me to get back into the water, both above and below. I spent about a year and a half lying in a bed, dreaming of the day when I could just ride my bike through the park on those perfect summer days. I started out on my dads electric bike, then I got a quad to go ride th desert on, then I started surfing. Vans shoes got me there.

I saw an episode of the crocodile hunter(Steve Irwin)surfing in his hiking boots, so I figured that vans would help me to get back into surfing, and you know what they worked. It was funny because I couldnt walk, and the doctor said that Id probably never walk again, but I could surf. I met johnny omara down at county line when he asked about the shoes. I would hobble down to the surf then paddle out, the ocean is like a giant mineral bath, so it heals, its good for you, unless its polluted then its bad for you.

Im almost back to normal, not quite the animal I used to be, but close.

vans shoes are definitely my favorite shoes.
Lately Ive been trying to get away from them, you know for better support so that I can start runnign again, and after 5 trips to the mall, I still havent seen anything I like but vans.

my alltime favorite was the first or second gen(Im not exactly sure here) Rowley XLT's in black. give me those and my ankle braces, and im set for whatever.

Re: VANS thread. Who else loves them?

Vans are great. I've been a Vans fan since 2nd grade (1984). I've gone through dozens since then too. I prolly have about 15 pair that I never wear taking up space in my closet. Flip Flops seem to be my shoe of choice lately. However I never limit myself to just Vans shoes either. Hats, shirts, hoodie, shorts, book bag, stickers I have a little bit of most of it. Long live Vans. I like the checkered ones best!! smile
