Wilkerson was one of the best hey, lip tricks on vert, street.  A great style.

I still have some 2hip zines down under my house with some old magazines. Have to dig them out and do some scans.  Would have got them in 89 or 90 in California.

I was a judge at the NYC MTS on 25th St.  I lived one block from the comp and knew the owner of the bike shop, Emy, who got the street closed for Ron.  I will get the date and post it.  It was a REALLY crazy day (and night) for all the NYC BMX dudes.  TONS of people there and everybody knew everybody.  Two highlights I remember were a dude taking a header on the pavement and getting knocked out and pissing all over himself and DMC's 720 which won the comp.  720's were almost as mythical as 900's at this time.  Dennis pulled the cleanest one anyone had ever seen and everyone went ape$hit!  Great, great day but not as great as the one at the Brooklyn Banks where Voelker did the 540 drop of of a 10 foot ledge onto the bank and rode out of it.  We rode there almost daily but no one had ever thought to try anything like that.  I have never seen a crowd get so crazy!  Dave was mobbed and everyone was jumping up and down and screaming and just losing it!!!  Legendary.

Ron also had to change the bike company name from WAL to 2-hip so his wife wouldn't end up with the company when they got divorced

if you really love someone they never get married

I have a Trend video that has some coverage of it.  I haven't watched it in years.  I will dig it up and get it put on DVD.  As for stills, there are tons of them floating around the net.  I don't remember if I have any shots in my film stash.  I have tons of shots from those days that have never been developed.  Perhaps I will get them developed.

Re: 2 Hip was started by Ron Wilkerson and Rich Avella in 1983..

mongoosefreak wrote:

Wayback in 1983, BMX Freestyle riders, Rich Avella and ronw(AKA Ron Wilkerson), started the 2-HIp Trick Team, performing shows in fairs and public gatherings around NORCAL. Both ronw. and Rich were still in High School getting made fun of for riding those “little bikes , but they didn’t care, they rode BMX! They stuck with it, hustling more and more shows until they were riding in enough shows to quit working @ a local Novato pizza establishment to have more time to ride.

ronw. was sending out 2hip TRICK TEAM resumes, and soon picked up co-sponsors like SKYWAY WHEELS and OAKLEY GRIPS. Then after a year of shows, the 2-HIp Trick Team was picked up by GT when they were first starting to make Freestyle bikes.

The 2-HIp team did their first tour for GT in 1984, blowing people's minds all around USA w/this new thing called BMX Freestyle riding. The tour was an amazing experience for the 2hip Team, amongst other things meeting all the ROCKVILLE crew- Slim, Spike, Hadji, Scooby, others- and then later on tour meeting BMX racer Rick Moliterno at the shop he worked at, and bringing him on tour to hang out for a few days getting him psyched on Freestyle. Rick went on to form the company Standard Bykes.
    After the tour, Rich stopped riding to pursue music and attend college, and ronw. quit GT to ride for Haro Bikes. ronw. had many new tricks he invented up his sleeve, and soon ronw. became a top pro rider traveling the world doing demo's with Brian Blyther and Dave Nourie.
    Vert half-pipe ramps were becoming more and more common for BMX riding, but the contests of the day only involved quarter-pipe and kick-turn ramps. So ronw went to Bob Morales of the AFA and offered to organize AFA half-pipe jams with him, but Bob was not interested...andso the 2-HIp KING OF VERT jams were born!
    THE BREAKDOWN:

    * NOVEMBER 8, 1986 LESEUR, MN KING OF VERT #1—The very first 2-HIp KING OF VERT pro contest, held on a semi-portable half in verrrry cold barn. (Most Memorable Moments: rafter footplants, first snow of the season outside the barn, the Energy INSIDE the barn=ELECTRIC)
    * DECEMBER 13, 1986 LEUCADIA, CA KOV—The second KING OF VERT jam...held on ronw.'s infamous ‘Enchanted Ramp’. (Most Memorable Moments: Who's this 'Hoffman' guy?, Dominguez' 900 attempt)
    * APRIL 18, 1987 HOUSTON, TX KOV—BIG BLUE RAMP (MMM: the very BIGGG blue ramp- bigger than most of the riders had ever ridden! Who’s this ‘Hoffman’ guy?)
    * MAY 30, 1987 FLINT, MI KOV—PLAYLAND JAM (MMM: THRONGS of spectators + Dominguez' 900 attempt, the hype and Energy was out of control)
    * AUGUST 8, 1987 COLORADO SPRINGS, CO KOV—PEPSI JAM (MMM: The crowd in the bleachers were too far away from the ramp!!!)
    * OCTOBER 23, 1987 WASHINGTON DC KOV—ROCKVILLE JAM
    * DECEMBER 5, 1987 LEUCADIA, CA KOV—THE ENCHANTED RAMP JAM II (MMM: Dominguez going BIG, and not to be forgotten: Craig Grosso's spontaneous nude run –the funniest thing ever seen- but much to Mr.Hoffman’s chagrin…)
    * MARCH 5, 1988 CHINO, CA KOV—THE BUST RAMP Mike Dominguez’ backyard

    * MAY 28, 1988 FLINT, MI KOV—PLAYLAND JAM Same Energy as the year before X2
    * JULY 2, 1988 AUSTIN, TX KOV—THE BARGE JAM A ramp built on a barge on the water in Austin. It was amazing that anyone could even RIDE this ramp, it was moving so badly…but using the water as a vert foam-pit on the hot day was fun- BEFORE there were foam-pits were in BMX. (MMM: hottie Austin grrls on the banks watching the jam)
    * SEPTEMBER 3, 1988 ALBANY, NY KOV—SKENECTADY JAM (MMM: no ramp-transpo problems!)
    * OCTOBER 15, 1988 WASHINGTON DC KOV—ROCKVILLE JAM American University
    * JANUARY 14, 1989 NEWPORT BEACH, CA KOV—88 FINALS (MMM: hypehypehypehype, Joe Johnson was awarded a custom spraypainted GMC ‘Pacer’ automobile for winning the title.) (Which died not long after reaching San Diego.)
    * MARCH 12, 1989 PARIS, FRANCE KOV—Wow! a stadium full of 4-5,000 BMX fans for a BMX race and 2hip invitational all-expenses-paid jam, sightseeing, helicopter tours around Paris, and a one-nite stay in a CASTLE (MMM: a bmx-crew let loose for the nite in a French castle=trouble.)
    * MARCH 25, 1989 TORONTO, CANADA KOV—2hip logo shirts IN EFFECT (MMM: Hoffman pulled the first 900!!!!)
    * APRIL 16, 1989 LA JOLLA, CA MTS—Held in conjunction w/ the La Jolla Grand Prix road bike race (MMM: the SUB ramp was born- made by Eddie Roman+ronw.+others)

    * MAY 27, 1989 WOODWARD, PA MTS
    * MAY 28, 1989 WOODWARD, PA KOV
    * SEPTEMBER 2, 1989 NYC MTS—BROOKLYN BANKS- the most amazing jam E-V-E-R, thousands of riders for the 2-HIp rebel-style jam… If you had the privilege of being there, you know… (MMM: Voelker's 270 off the wall into a little ramp)
    * SEPTEMBER 4, 1989 LONG ISLAND, NY KOV—KOV SOUTHAMPTON JAM
    * NOVEMBER 18, 1988 SALEM, OR MTS
    * JANUARY 27, 1990 NEWPORT BEACH, CA MTS—88 FINALS (MMM: Another 900 by Hoffman)
    * JULY 14, 1990 INDIANAPOLIS, IN KOV
    * OCTOBER 20, 1990 PALM SPRINGS, CA MTS—Another MTS held in conjunction with a big road bike race (MMM: flipping the trailer full of ramps en route to Palm Springs from San Diego.)
    * APRIL 19, 1991 SAN DIEGO, CA KING OF DIRT#1—The first KOD ever- held at Mission Trails
    * APRIL 20, 1991 VISTA, CA KOV

Yet to be remembered dates:

    * ??? BRONX, NY PARK Mulally Rink, a packed-out shreddable park right nextto Yankee Stadium- now home to the ‘King of New York’ jams keepin’ it real (MMM: WATCH YOUR STUFF- ronw. got 2 bikes stolen on the same day!)
    * ??? NYC MTS—2hip blocked off 25th St. btw. 3rd and 4th Avenues and set up the street course- an AMAZING day of mayhem and shredding in the MIDDLE of Manhatten! (MMM: ronw. FLYING down the streets of NYC with a 30’ truck loaded with the street course…)

Shortly after this couple-year run of unforgettable events, all sponsor money dropped out of BMX... Money in BMX instantly became very tight, with only the hardcore riders left. Haro Bikes stopped caring about anything BMX, so ronw. quit and started WILKERSON AIRLINES- one of the first rider-owned 'hardcore' BMX companies.

Events since then:

    * OCTOBER 30, 1993 SACRAMENTO, CA 2HIP PARK#1—the first 2hip PARK contest!
    * OCTOBER 31, 1993 NOVATO, CA KOV
    * OCTOBER 1, 1994 HUDSON VALLEY, NY 2HIP PARK
    * OCTOBER 4, 1997 HOUSTON, TX MTS
    * MAY 25, 1998 ESCONDIDO, CA 2HIP PARK
    * MAY 30-31, 1999 SAN DIEGO, CA
    * JULY 24, 1999 PLACERVILLE, CA KOD
    * AUGUST 1999 LONG ISLAND, NY 2HIP PARK—Rain sucks
    * SEPTEMBER 25-26, 1999 Phoenix, AZ BURNING BIKE #1—UNBELIEVABLE EVENT!!! 2HIP PARK AND KING OF DIRT on an Indian reservation. Riders campedout onsite hiding liquor from the authorities. The bands, ‘Orange 9mm’ and ronw.’s band ‘Cellophane Solution’ played while a massive pile of bikes burned in true Burning Bike fashion
      OCTOBER 7, 2000 SAN FRANCISCO, CA MTS—Golden Gate Park Mayhem in THE city
    * OCTOBER 20, 2001 SAN FRANCISCO, CA MTS—Golden Gate Park
    * OCTOBER 19-20, 2002 SAN FRANCISCO, CA MTS—Golden Gate Park
    * OCTOBER 19, 2003 SAN FRANCISCO, CA MTS—Golden Gate Park
    * OCTOBER 11-12, 2008 SAN FRANCISCO, CA MTS—Treasure Island an AMAZING location right on an island in the middle of the SF Bay, and an extremely creative course by the likes of the ROG (Riders Of Gilroy) crew! (MMM: the Blue Angels practicing right overhead during Saturday practice=LOUD)

Yet to be remembered dates:

    * Jun 15, 1991??? VANCOUVER, CANADA 2HIP PARK—the first 2hip jam held in an oooold skool cement park!

After a couple years of WILKERSON AIRLINES, ronw. began to produce 2-HIp BIKES. The first 2-HIp frame made was the burly flatland frame, the 2-HIp STOUT BOY. Further 2-HIp frame offerings were the 2-HIp BIG BOY, and then the legendary 2-HIp PORK, made in 6061 or a burly 4130- “the last frame you'll ever buy .

2-HIp has always been the premier sponsoring company of up-and-coming pro riders, as for MOST 2hip was their first sponosor. Previous 2-HIp riders include:

Leigh Ramsdell
Kevin Jones
Jay Miron
Lee Reynolds
Trever Meyer
John Parker
Cameron Birdwell
Jason Davies
+ the current 2-HIp riders (see TEAM page)

(who did we forget?)

After years of making only parts: frames, forks, twist–spoke wheelsets, handlebars, in 2003 2–HIp began producing complete bikes, slowly growing the company to its current 2010 offerings, OF WHICH YOU SEE TODAY!

And we’re not done yet---Check back because we ALWAYS got some big things in the works---CHECK THE 2HIP PORK 25 YEAR ANNIVERSARY BIKE

2-HIp has roots, and we’re not going anywhere.
Thanx to the support from all the riders,
Peaceout, and keep it real.

Ron Wilkerson deserves all of the props people can give him. He helped me out that is for sure. He can't be thanked enough. -Rick Moliterno
