How to build GT Superlaces Step by Step Easy Process with Spoke Legnth

Been meaning to make this thread for a long time... This is a question that pops up every other month (along with proper spoke length) and the time has never been taken to make a specific thread with pictures and Information that would be good enuff to be a Sticky in my Opinion. So this one will be it. If you have a "better" way to do it keep it to yourself or make your own thread. And remember this is aimed specifically at "Superlaces" although building a regular wheel works pretty much the same. I am showing the easiest way to build a Superlace wheel-set... Or at least the easiest way I have found to do it... And I have over 15 sets now most built by yours truly. And I have also built several sets for others as well now, including some on 24" and 26" rims...

I will be making corrections along the way while building this thread... In spelling and grammar etc... Bear with me a bit while I construct this thread...

Spoke Length: 194mm 72 each
Nipples: 72 each (you will want the longer nipples for this)

OK Lets get Started...

I am using a hub that needs new powder and an Araya rim I have laying around... Same thing as a UKAI so no worries... 36H is 36H when it comes to this process...
We are going to go from this...
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3970.jpg
To this...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC4037.jpg
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC4044.jpg

First thing you want to do is build a Squid as I like to call it... Looks like a Squid to me... LOL Outside Holes first...
You need to make sure with the rear hub "in particular" that the Ukai (or Araya) stamping is on the correct side so when you mount the wheel the writing is properly facing the drive side of the bike... So basically... If you are doing the rear hub the side the freewheel goes on should be on the outside facing holes... So when you approach the bike from the drive side you can read the writing on the wheel stamp... And if you apply UKAI decals they wont be upside down... wink

Here is what to do first... Drop 9 Spokes in the outside holes

Re: How to build GT Superlaces Step by Step Easy Process with Spoke Legnth

Next Flip the Squid upside down and hold the hoop in your lap... Put the first Spoke in the outside facing hole to the left of the Valve stem hole
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3975.jpg

If this was the rear hub this is where the placement of the first spoke would be with the drive side (freewheel side) facing up... So when it was flipped vertical the stamp writing would be facing the drive side properly... Notice it is the outside hole just to the left of the Valve stem hole to make it easy... With the front hub you want to do the same thing but only to make sure the decals on the hubs both face the same way when they are mounted... Yes you could flip the wheel but then the Decals on the rim would be backwards... Just a detail to watch out for...

Re: How to build GT Superlaces Step by Step Easy Process with Spoke Legnth

The Next Spoke will go 4 holes to the left in the outside facing hole again... Then repeat the process all the way around screwing on nipples until you have done this all the way around the hoop... I twist the nipples 4 or 5 times just enough to hold them on so they don't fall off... Then I twist them all the way to the ends of the threads on the spokes so they are even all the way around...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3979.jpg

You will end up with this when you are done... Getting to this point only took me 3-5 minutes. And it only took that long because I kept stopping for pictures...

Re: How to build GT Superlaces Step by Step Easy Process with Spoke Legnth

OK Next.... Time to Squid the Other side of the Hub in the outside holes again... Should look like this... Drop 9 More Spokes
Remember... Superlaces are Laced all to one side of the hub so all the spokes will go in the same way...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3981.jpg
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3982.jpg

You will then grab the hub and give it a twist in the correct direction... I will explain why in the next couple steps...
It will look like this... Note: The correct direction to twist is in the direction of the Bubbles/Holes in the Rim...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3980.jpg

Re: How to build GT Superlaces Step by Step Easy Process with Spoke Legnth

Now Holding the Spokes so they don't fall out... Flip the rim over in your lap...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3984.jpg
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3985.jpg

Face the Stamp on the rim away from you so you can see it like this... You will be aiming for the hole on the other side of the stamp in the rim... The outside facing hole which goes/leans in the same direction as the twisted spokes you already have done...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3989.jpg
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3986.jpg

Next is why I had you twist the Hub... There are allot of ways to lace wheels... I am just showing you how "I" Made lacing Superlaces so easy for myself and it will be easy for you too... With the wheel in your lap and the hub twisted all the way you will notice that the spokes cross over the Hub itself like this picture...  (this Crossing is what makes Superlaces "technically" a 4x Pattern since the cross on the hub is considered the first X'ing) This "angle" is what you need to pay particular attention to for the next step... This is the angle you will be looking for for the first spoke on the other side... Again you can count over holes like allot of people do... But this makes it easy to see with Superlaces in particular.

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3980.jpg

Re: How to build GT Superlaces Step by Step Easy Process with Spoke Legnth

Here is a slightly tricky part but what makes the Process easy... Holding the wheel in your lap still... with the hub twisted all the way and the stamp of the wheel in front of you as pictured... Find the spoke that will just fit into the hole on the other side of the stamp enough to thread on a Nipple AND that creates the angle I pointed out on the other side of the hub... So the spoke crosses the hub with the same angle and the Nipple fits on snug just like the ones already in place... That will look like this...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3990.jpg

Then remember to count over 4 holes in the rim and place in the next spoke remembering that it is the hole on the right of the spoke you already have in place on the other side... Like this... Technically you don't need to count anymore since you just need to remember that it is one hole to the right the rest of the way around...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3991.jpg
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3993.jpg

Now to make it easier on yourself since you already have the spokes started in the right place... Untwist the hub so you have some room to easily put the nipple on the spokes. Like this... And remember one hole to the right all the way around...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3992.jpg
One to the right

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3993.jpg
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3994.jpg

Finish that up and you end up with this in less than 10 minutes...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3995.jpg

Give the Hub a twist in the right direction and you end up with this... You are home free from here!!!

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC3996.jpg
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC4008.jpg

Re: How to build GT Superlaces Step by Step Easy Process with Spoke Legnth

Ok... At this point you may start to worry because all of the nipples don't pop right thru the holes with one twist... If you are patient and push the hub back and forth (dishing it in and out) as you twist it they will pop in... But that is really not that important... Just twist them as far as you can at this point.  Remember I said the spokes actually sit over the hub??? That makes it tight and tough to twist as easily as a regular hub...

So with the hub twisted and in your lap again you need to drop 9 more spokes in the inside holes (Squid time) on either side I usually start going to the right (which means I dropped the 9 spokes in with the stamp on the rim upside-down). So when you flip it to work the stamp is right side up...  It will again look like this...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC4011.jpg

Now with the rim stamp facing away from you again (and the rim Flipped over with the loose spokes on top) pull all of the spokes all toward you like the next picture...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC4015.jpg

Now we need to find the correct spoke... When the rim stamp or valve stem hole it away from you it will be the spoke at a 90 degree angle on the left that you can see me pointing at in this picture... Notice I pointed that spoke outwards so it can be easily seen...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC4016.jpg

Take that spoke and lace it Over 2 and under 1 then place it in the spoke hole right next to the Valve stem opening... Like this...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC4017.jpg

This is what the Lacing should look like...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC4022.jpg

Notice how the spoke on the other side of the stamp runs perfectly parallel to the one you just inserted... wink
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC4021.jpg

Now one Spoke at a time repeat this process all the way around the rim adding nipples to each spoke as you go of course... Sometimes it will seem like you cant get the nipples to thread on easily. This is when you will play with the dish of the hub back and forth to make it easy to put the nipples on.

Look at these pictures... See how moving the hub back and forth makes the spokes stick out further??? This is what makes the nipples easier to put on... ALSO... Remember your concern about not getting all the nipple into place earlier??? After getting this side done that issue is in the past as it solves itself... By the time you put the last spoke in they will have worked themselves into the right place... cool

Dish out:

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC4023.jpg
Dish in:

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Building%20Superlaces/GEDC4025.jpg

When you have finished you will have one side done and it should look like this... This only took me 5 more minutes...

Longer with pictures of course

Squid the rims inner holes... Flip it over and repeat the same lacing process again and you are done... cool

Would you need slightly smaller spokes fo the inner row of holes? Say 192mm?

Nope... Or I would have included that info in the thread... wink The angle makes up for the length when the spokes are laced. The holes are only staggered so the spokes will fit all on one side of the hub. There are other reasons as well but that is the primary reason as far as lacing goes...

in about an hour and a half...

I do have one question for you...this really through me for a loop at first and i'm wondering if you've ever run across it. My front hub flanges are offset from each other counterclockwise instead of clockwise. When i went to lace the second set of outside spokes it took me three tries before i realized that I had to go 1 hole to the left instead of one hole to the right like your instructions say. It took me a while to figure out why nothing was lining up quite right lol. Anyways, the rear went smooth as silk and I just wanted to thank you again for these instructions. Now just need to get them trued up! big_smile

Yep... I have a NOS Chrome Rear Hub that did that to me... I relaced the thing 3 times before i figured it out. It's like when they machined it, it was off by a hole on the other side... Weird you found a hub with the same problem... Glad it worked out for you... I was wondering when someone would use this post and tell me how it went...
