You said you bought an 86. What the problem? ALL 1986 GT's ARE 100% CHROMOLY (full spectrum, low end to high end bikes, both race and freestyle).

GT did not start manufacturing ANY trimoly frames until the 1987 model year.

They actually did start in 86. You don't see a lot of them but someone just sold one in the for sale section.

Re: Spec for 1986 GT Performer

Well if it's Japanese or US produced it's all chromoly. If it's built in Taiwan it's trimoly. I suppose production could have moved from the Japanese factory to the Taiwan factor in late 86. Post a link to that frame if you could please.

Re: Spec for 1986 GT Performer

I have to own up to my mistake. I thought that the Tai built 86 frames were actually built for the 87 model year bikes. I guess a few did slip out badged as 86's. I'm very interested to know if these few are full chromoly or not.

Taiwanese serials, usually on the bottom bracket. Sometimes they are on the rear dropout though.
DS6I2760  DS for the Factory. 6 for the year 86. I for the 9'th month September.

Yeah they did make some as 86's. They are not stamped and not full cr-mo just like the 87's. There is a lot of info in the Official 86 Gt performer thread in catchall. Sorry I suck with computers...dont know how to post links. Also if you look in the (old) for sale-sold section you can look at the one that just sold. Its on the first page and titled 86 GT PERFORMER COMPLETE. It's a OG 86 performer frame with DS6 serial and I bet it has no stamp either.

Re: Spec for 1986 GT Performer

Glad I just found this thread. I've been wondering about a bike I had as a kid. For Christmas 1986 I was given a Blue GT Performer with white bars and a white seat post and white slotted sprocket. It had a gyro and a lower mounted brake. It had locking levers also. I think it may have even had the mallet stem. I don't know if it was an 86 or 87. I have seen so much discussion about different parts on these two years and it seems like my Performer had parts that a Pro Performer would have had. It was definitely a Performer bought new in December of 86. I don't know if the frame was tri or full cro-mo. I was hoping some of you experts may notice something I listed that was year specific for the Performer and could let me know of the year without a doubt. The color combo on it baffles me also. When I look on the site I see the colored frames almost always have the matching colored bars and post, even on OG bikes. Mine without a doubt was Blue with white bars, post and components. What gives? Help folks....this is driving me crazy tongue    Thanks for any insight!

Re: Spec for 1986 GT Performer

86 performers came with no detangler. Most shops added them when they were putting bikes together, as they did many dealer customs.
The early 85/86 Dyno/GT Performer as I remember came with a choice of either mag wheels or rims- (though not as popular) chrome/white Nakano N.K.N/CNC rims. My friend got the mags, his brother the rims on his Dyno. I seem to remember the rims on the 85 models were more prevalent.
The brakes I am thought were the FS890s in 85/86, jumping to the odyssey on the pro performer? Now it's fuzzy, lol. I'm pretty sure the pro had odyssey gear. World tour model might have gotten the locking levers..

Most kids I know jumped on the odyssey bandwagon, gravitating to the futuristic look of the odyssey parts. I know I couldn't wait to get my grubby hands on an RX3 lever....

Hope this was helpful.

Re: Spec for 1986 GT Performer

Anyone know the difference in frame sizes for performer and pro performer for 86 and 87? Is there one? Like head tube length? Thanks

Re: Spec for 1986 GT Performer

Head tube length is 4" on all. The 87 Pro Performer used the new S-bend downtube design frame, same as the Pro Freestyle Tour. The Performer was trimoly single bend downtube design in 87. 86 is sketchy as some frames were starting to be made in the Taiwan factory for Performers. The Japanese and US built frames could have been used on the Performer or the Pro Performer (both based on the same frame).

Re: Spec for 1986 GT Performer

19mm would be a popular measurement of the diameter of a spindle of a 3 piece crank.
