Sometimse I feel like I just want to dye...

I know there have been a few threads before about dyeing mags but I just wanted to share how I spent my Friday night. I'm working on my first ever build for the chop summer build off and was wanting some pink Hutch style OGK star mags. Since finding and or affording them in time was way out of the question I made my own. I bought a set of used but not to abused white ogk's off ebay for $40 soaked them in a homemade container with about 10 gallons water to 1.5 gallon of Clorox bleach for 24 hours (at witch time the box fell apart!). They were looking better but still needed some work so I took a dishwashing sponge and some softscrub and scrubbed 'em good. I used some 500 grit wet/dry sand paper for the bad spots. Once I was happy enough I ran them thru the dishwasher. I bought a kegger style big bucket from Big Lots (it's a cheapo chain store, cost $6) that luckliy fit the rim diameter just right and dumped in a full can of salt and one packet of petal pink dye. Added about 3 gallons of boiling water . Mixed it up and let it soak! I checked the rim about every 30-45 minutes and flipped it over often. Not sure if it helped but after 1.5 hours I poured out half of the dye and reboiled it and put it back in (the hotter the better!) After 3 hours it was good enough I suppose so I took it out, rinsed and dried, and........Tada!big_smile

Before any cleaning (actually looked dirtier than this pic shows):

After 24 in the bleach solution, hand scrubbing then a dishwasher cleansing:

In the bucket:

And the results:

Now wish we luck on the rear mag! and I see that people spray WD-40 on there mags after they dye them. Does that really help? Let me know what whatcha think! smile

That looks awesome, I wish this was thought of B.I.T.D.
The WD helps seal in the color and makes the mag less dry from the bleaching, I use armor all on white ones to avoid yellowing.

Thanks for fixing up my mulitpe posting Charlie Brown!
I got the rear rim in the bucket now. looking at the other one it's a little dark to be Hutch "barbie" pink but that's ok I still think it looks cool. Will WD both later today.

Thanks Tim.  smile by this time next week the whole bike should be done and then I'll be ready to cruise in style cool
Just pulled out the rear mag and it looks just as good. Gott 'em rinsed and wipped down with wd-40.
Now I got the fun part of putting the axels back together.
I also have some brake cables in the pink bath. They are'nt taking as quick as the rims but I'm going to make them pink come hell or high water lol I will update with the pics of those if they look good.

Re: Sometimse I feel like I just want to dye...

Update:
After a few hours the gyro cables that I was trying to dye were not doing much. So I calmly walked away and let them sit for 20 hours. Checked on them this morning and Bam nice and Hutch barbie pink! I was a bit nervous doing this to a set of NOS white gyro cables cuz they aren't exactly cheap but I am so far happy with the results.
What I did was find a tall skinny container and I masked off the connector, which I wanted to remain white,  then taped them up so just the desired cable part was in the pink. Here is a pic after the first round for the front cable:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e155/rts007/Bmx%20workings/pinkcables003.jpg
This was the only cable I have to do twice because I couldn't remove any of the housing. The rear one and the front one are both done. And here it is stringed up and soaking the other half:

2 Buns Up!

I'm watching my t.v. and a man comes on that tells me how white my mags can be, but he can't be a man cause he doesn't ride the same bmx as me.

Very cool. I need to do this to some blue z rims!  I just spend two nights making these white again! Steel wool and soap...https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/266741/img_20201222_0239342645fee3e9016.jpg
