1977 Masa XR-3
1977 Masa XR-3
1977 Masa XR-3, rear suspension, ARAI drum brakes in Ukai Heavy-Duty wheels, Suntour Honor Derailler, Fresh powdercoat and new stickers.
Back in 1978 I had a MASA XR-1, which was a single speed version of this bike, but did not have the drum brakes. My father bought it for me brand new from the local Honda Motorcycle dealer for $199, and the three speed version was $229, in 1978!!! Another kid in the neighborhood had this version, but I never really knew him that well. Since then, I have never seen another one, until I found this relic on Ebay. It was beat up at the time but everything was there. I had a local sign company re-do the decals, and then had the f/f powdercoated in the blue, and the bars/neck combo, chain guard, seat clamp, crank, all done in black powder coat. I re-touched every nut and bolt on the bike and re-assembled it into what you see here. Comments welcome, anybody else ever see one of these??

Re: 1977 Masa XR-3
Hey, Masa's also appeared in Australia around '79, and were also sold through the local motor bike dealership! I remember a slightly 'tuffer' version of this with Tange forks and cast alloy mag wheels. Then there was a rigid bmx frame version, again with Tange forks and them damn heavy mags! I saw 1 at a second hand store about 3 years ago......
Nice resto btw !

Re: 1977 Masa XR-3
Thanks for the info and compliment. I'm very interested in scoring another one, of any sort. They aren't really the most desirable bike, but I have a lot of fond memories of mine.

Re: 1977 Masa XR-3
Tell me about this process -especially the decals -did they do the work, or did you have to 'provide artwork'?
I have parts

Very nice bike you got there, what do you think they're worth being that they are rare and cost a good bit to begin with.
I have no idea, but not very much as I don't think anybody but me has a thing for them

Just picked one up myself this weekend. Doesn't have the rear fender, seat bar, or chain guard on mine but looks to be original
I just found another myself but haven't even unpacked it yet. I sent you a PM and I'd love to see some pictures of yours.

Re: 1977 Masa XR-3
I was at the Pittsburgh Bike Swap today and one of the vendors had a Blue Masa all OG- same blue and the version with gears. The drum brakes are so cool on these. He wanted 500 for it. Kind of kicking myself that I didn't nab it. The Swap was held at Bicycle Heaven.

I have just joined this forum and also have a Masa XR-3. Mine seems to be original but is missing the fenders. Would you have a spare decal set, I would be interested if you do have a set.

Re: 1977 Masa XR-3
MASA stands for Multi Advanced Sports Action. I am the son of the founder. I am happy to see this bike still running. You have done a great job restoring.
MASA was a short-life company. It ceased operation because half of the shipment from Japan, the manufacturer, was rocks inside the box. It happens with the Japanese as well.
I was 17 then, so it was in 1978. They were sold by selected Honda dealers, mostly motorcycle dealers.
