1984 Skyway T/A

T/A Homebrew

Apparently the stock T/A frame wasn't tough enough for the original owner of the bike so he modded it with headtube and chainstay gussets as well as some beefier dropouts. The welds are really rough as though it was a kid using his dad's welder for the first time. The parts are an authentic 80's mashup with the exception of the tires.

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

Then I tried to clean up the frame "mods" and built it up. Most of the parts came from a guy in Des Moines who raced in the 80's.

Wow.  Unbelievable...  Nice rescue job on your part.  That gusset might actually look cool if the welds were smoothed and rounded.  It would be a lot of work but it could also be cut out and filed back down.  Then you'd be looking at a new paint or re-chrome job.

Anyway, nice save!

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

I've been doing some research on these bikes and found out dirt bros bought and sold a few of these things in the 90's. This makes me curious about the dirt bros sticker on the headtube. Does anyone know a concrete way to tell if this is a t/a are a dirt bros?

Yes this is a T/A. Dirt Bros. made a bunch of these frames for their riders. A part of 90s bmx history.

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

Looked at the frame again and I think the gusset is different from the Dirt Bros.
Drop out welds are scary looking!

Re: 1984 Skyway T/A

Hey man... I just bought this frame off member hboost. Will be doing a c. 1990 Dirt Bros. build. I'm a little scared of those awful looking additional gussets/braces/plates... What can you tell me about them? Any chance they can be removed? Reworked? Redone?
