Keep yourself busy. I haven't smoked since January and the biggest thing is to stay busy.

Good luck to ya Trevor... Saturday was my 3 year anniversary for quiting.  Smoked for 17 years.  First few days are the hardest by far.

Re: Quitting smoking... day one

Back in the old days when smoke were practically free, there was even less incentive to quit. I quit while I was living in brooklyn, just when prices started going through the roof. I started thinking about it in terms of rent and vacations and ridiculously expensive dinner with my wife. That helped. Speaking of the ladies (or dudes , if that's your thing), once you get your lungs and arteries back, you'll become a lot better at a lot of things.

Here in Ontario, you need a second job to be a smoker. Eight, nine, 10 bucks a pack!

Seriously, man, if you were a pack-day smoker, you put that bread into a Squareback account, and you'll be riding one soon enough.

Oh, yeah, another trick: I also wrote the name of my most hated politician on the pack. Then I thought, Why am I paying that douche bag money to kill myself.

Good luck.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. Quitting is so easy...  I've done it hundreds of times.

Re: Quitting smoking... day one

Ive quit a few times, for various amounts of times. I seemed to have an easier time of it then, but I wasn't as serious as I am this time. SO many people die from cancer, and I don't want to do that to my kids....

You just said it yourself...best reason there is to quit. My mom died at 50 from lung cancer, my dad died 3 years later at 53. At least he got to see my first son, my mom never got to see her grandkids. There were so many times I wanted to ask her advice about my kids, or what I did at their age, and there were times I was furious with the both of them for dying on me.
I've never smoked, but I hated every minute that my parents did, and I never understood how you could let those things rule your life.
Spend some time in the N stage cancer ward at your local hospital. I did with both my parents, and I could think of a million better ways to die.

Re: Quitting smoking... day one

I'm getting ready to go back down this path myself. Decided I'm going to call Kaiser's Smokers' Hotline this time though. Good luck Trevor. You're an inspiration and the voice of reason to me. I've got kids that always want me to quit, and I haven't been able to come up with a single good reason not to...just a lot of bad excuses.

Re: Quitting smoking... day one

good on you trev, 3 1/2 months smokefree here big_smile

read the allan carr book.  i know everyone recommends it, but they do because it's helpful.  that combined with the maths behind it all helped me - it worked out that at a pack of 25's a day until my estimated late 60's death was gonna cost me nzd$150,000.  good incentive not to smoke that first cig, and that's the only one you need to worry about.

good luck bro.  first few weeks is a bitch, but i can happily say i'm 95% over it now.  well worth it in the long run.

Re: Quitting smoking... day one

Good luck Trevor. I need to quit, been smoking for 21 years and feel it everyday. Ive pretty much conceded that smoking will kill me if something else doesnt get me earlier. Hang tough and dont try to justify having just one, thats a suckers game. They say if you can go 3 days the rest is just the physical habit.

Re: Quitting smoking... day one

I sure appreciate all the words guys. Im climbin the walls today. Came home from work early, had to get out of there. Here now, by myself, no one to bitch at, and no one around me with cigarettes.... seems easier away from work, but im still chewin gum like an s.o.b...... I just want to get this day under my belt...... I've quit before with some of the methods other than cold turkey. This time, I have decided I have to suffer. I don't think i'll ever quit forever if it seems easy. I need to always remember what a b!tch it is to quit, so I never risk starting again.
