Team Murray Builds! Team Murray Questions! Post them here...

Have an AWESOME Team Murray X20C, X20R, X20FS, X24C or X24R bike? Or maybe just starting on collecting one? Any questions about the parts? Please post them all here! There are posts with information on here, but most aren't current and some members are gone. I'm by no means an Expert here! Just a Team Murray Collector. I try to educate myself and help others out with what I can find on these '80's Old School BMX Team Murrays and I trust the Pros on here and at other BMX websites. I really like collecting these one of kind bikes, that we all had when we were kids, that couldn't afford expensive BMX bikes with our own money. We could only afford the department store bike brands.

So post your photos and questions here:

Here's My Amazing Find Of A Lifetime. Enjoy!

Also Here's A Link On Information Pertaining To This *NOS* Bike: http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/murray/34813

Did you add the rims?  I know my X20r had Acs hubs but crap rims.  Changed them out.  I dont remember the X20c.  Frame looks just like the X20r.  It was my first racing bike. wink

Hello huffyrider,

No, I didn't change out the rims. This bike is completely stock and *NOS*. Just like the day it rolled out of the store. I do know that the X20R came with 28 spoke steel chrome, no name brand rims with zinc plated spokes and 28 spoke hole high flange ACS hubs.

Thanks for asking. big_smile

...Also both the X20R and X20C have the same geometry, except the X20C is made out of chrome-moly with cleaner even welds and the X20R is made out of mild steel with toothpaste like welds and a bit heavier. This is the same for both the X24R and X20C.

Again thanks for asking. big_smile

Thanks. I had to have the seat tube welded at the BB where it looks like it just came unglued. My friends weld looks a heckuva lot better than Murrays. Thinking about getting him to hit all the welds on it lol.

Hey Lou,

That's a very good question. I do know that the X20C and X24C full chrome-moly frames and forks were made by Elf for Murray back in the early '80's and are a better quality frameset than the X20R Mild Steel ones. It's most likely Scott Clark race on a factory made by Elf for Murray X20C frame and I'm not sure on the fork.

Anyone else out there know the answer to Lou's question? cool

I was watching this on the bay. I still wouldn`t mind having it. Tubular brake bridge and good welds soulnds like it`s a chromoly.

Hey Lou,

That one on the bay looks like a later model Murray X20R mild steel frame. I say this because of the toothpaste like welds, but it looks like it's in good shape. Go for it! Would make for a great reto project build!

Murray MFG. was originally based in Cleveland,Ohio. They manufactured bikes, sporting equipment, toys and the old "pedal cars".Later they expanded into lawn equipment...mowers and such. That manufacturing plant was located in Lawrenceburgh,Tennessee with its offices in nearby Brentwood,Tennessee. For whatever reasons,Murray decided to house their BMX line of bikes from the Tennessee location.Specifically, the x series(x24,x20r and the track certified series). In the mid to late eighties,SE Racing had some mfg. problems and struck a deal with Murray to be the fabricators of their Hauler and Mauler series bikes. That deal was short lived, but what came out of it for Murray was the knock-off landing gear forks that you will find on some of the x24c and x20c models. The c model frames were what the factory rode and could also be found in select department stores. They usually had to be an ordered item. The chromoly frames were fabricated by ELF.These c series bikes were decent bikes considering the full chromo frame and fork and the components that you could get stock on them.Araya,ACS,DiaCompe,Sugino.All good stuff. They had some top names as well on that team from back in the day.Jeff Bottema and Scott Clark are often mentioned but Anthony Sewell also was on that team.He was a world champion from the Jag days of bmx and they had one of the best amatures of the day on that team as well...Brad Birdwell from Birmingham,Al.So,think what you may,the Murrays, especially the r series and the c series were not too shabby.I have an x20 r and an x20 c,an x24c frameset and an x24 frameset in my collection.Hope this info has helped.
