More Mongoose help needed

This is another project bike. It's a an '80 Mongoose with "Team Mongoose" decals. I'd like to remove the decals and replace them without destroying the original paint. I have never restored a bike before and could use all the help I can get.

im a mongoose collector , welcome to the museum - you can find help with just about anything you need here . 99% of the members are super cool and very willing to answer questions. if it were me , i woulndnt put a new set on there (unless your gonna take it all apart and powder it) - they dont look 2 bad , especially if its a team . if your just gonna ride it id just clean it up , but thats one that i would redo from the ground up and hang on the wall.

There look to be nothing wrong with it. I'd leave it alone, maybe throw a coat of wax on it. It's only original once.

Re: More Mongoose help needed

The first thing you'll want to do before yanking stickers and the like off, are figure out what you truly have. Parts and stickers were easy to replace and done frequently. Most folks are of the mindset to not tear down stuff that is in good (but yet not mint) stuff.

Now, if you have a Team Mongoose, then the Serial Number "should" have a T in it. But, the blue doesn't look team blue, and if I see correctly, the chromoly frame sticker looks to be the regular Mongoose type (front only chromo). Also, the chain side seat stay will have a flat spot by the sprocket if it's a Team.

That being said, if it is a Team Goose, you should consider leaving the Team stickers on. If it's not, then, they aren't the OG stickers, and there is less originality to worry about preserving, so, yank 'em off. Use a razor knife and lift them off carefully.

Outside of possibly having Mongoose cranks, I don't really see anything on the bike that is OG Mongoose parts, so, should be a fun project. Enjoy!

Re: More Mongoose help needed

The decals look like standard 81 decals, post the serial number so we can determine what it is first. Like mentioned above, don't mess with decals till you know for sure what you have, not to mention replacing fair/good original decals with repop's will hurt the value.

I'm looking for a clean 1975 Mongoose (long) frame, and a nice original finish Mongoose Two/Four

Re: More Mongoose help needed

It's a Dec 80.

Those would be the correct decals since a Dec 80 would be an 81 model, I wouldn't do anything but clean it up, changing decals would hurt the value.

I agree with "KenC", leave it as is for the stickers and just clean it up.

Re: More Mongoose help needed

I disassembled the bike and plan on just cleaning it up, and replaceing the tires. The forks were really spotted with rust. I got the rust off with muriatic acid. Now I need to polish them.

http://i791.photobucket.com/albums/yy194/wibradley/Mongoose/P4233719.jpg

Does anyone know if there are Tange decals avalable to replace the shredded decals on the fork?

http://i791.photobucket.com/albums/yy194/wibradley/Mongoose/P4233721.jpg

I hope to be able to save the original paint work. I'm going to try some rubbing compound on it tonight.

Re: More Mongoose help needed

Decals pop up on eBay from time to time. I bought a set from someone in Europe, early March, still waiting however.....so you might want to stick to US.

Re: More Mongoose help needed

I've grabbed a couple sets of TRX repro decals off the bay in the past. They came from somewhere in Asia.I'd rather swap you frames than see you strip that,so if you aren't happy with it,pm me.I have a Nickle plated '81 with repro decals that I'd swap.

Re: More Mongoose help needed

Did it have 2 frame decals on it. Ebay has them all the time, BMX Products is the sellers name and I have purchased from them myself. Also love the pads on the bike.

Re: More Mongoose help needed

The frame down tube had the Mongoose "green" decal with the "Team Mongoose" decal over it. I took them both off thinking that they were incorrect. The Mongoose "gold" decal on the top tube seems correct, but I'm not sure.

What do you guys think?

Re: More Mongoose help needed

Yea,that's the right decal setup for '80.In '81 the frame decal migrated from the top tube to the down tube at some point, probably along with the new step down dropouts.

Those aren't the correct forks, it would have come with pinched Tange forks. If you can't find decals then just look for a set of chrome pinched forks instead of searching for decals for the wrong forks. Bill has the correct fork decals.

The decals moved to the down tube somewhere around Dec 1980 (1981 model year) the same time they went to the black background.

Re: More Mongoose help needed

I have cleaned up the crank, chain wheel, and stem. Some time ago the stem had been painted black. I soaked it in gas for about an hour, then brushed the paint off with a nylon brush.

http://i791.photobucket.com/albums/yy194/wibradley/Mongoose/P4263738.jpg

The bike is nearly ready to put back together. The rims I have for it are in such bad shape I decided not to use them. The chrome on the rear wheel is bubbled and flaking off. A friend of my neighbor's saw me working on the bike last night and stopped over to see what I was doing. I showed him the rims, and he told me he has a garage full of old school BMX parts, and that he's sure he has some rims I could use. What luck!

Re: More Mongoose help needed

I painted the handle bars and seat post with Interlux Brightside Polyurethane Fire Red for a change. I have used this paint on boats and I like the durability and ease of use.
