1983 Schwinn Predator 24

Love this bike, built it up recently all parts came from MP except tires. Pro Neck bars, team Schwinn cranks NOS (at the time) Suntour pedals, Elina Ultra light laid back seat one piece Light and fun

I met MP 3 years ago and after sticking with it was able to get him to part with some bikes and other gear. This one sat in the basement for some time after going through parts from him I built this up. After turning 40 figured I needed something a bit bigger never get on a 20 in again due to bad knees. Just wanted to share some of this history back in the days if you were racing Poulsons class you may have gotten a good view of the back of some of these bikes.

Re: 1983 Schwinn Predator 24

Very Cool Early Schwinn 24" Cruiser.  1980 might be a bit early, but if there was one, MP would have been one of the guys with access to it.  It wouldn't have been called a Predator in 80, the Predator name didn't enter the picture until 82 and didn't become widespread until 83.  I have a similar frame, the tall head tube gives it away as a special order frameset rather than a complete.  If the forks have the Monster decals, that screams 83/84 and they are rare since they did not hold up to much abuse.

Again SWEET piece of early Schwinn BMX history big_smile

Yeah Im pretty sure the 84s were the year they started with no gusset mostly. The serial number should tell you after the "G".
Nice bike. Looks ready to race.

I just compared the pix to my 83 and the first thing i noticed is the taller head tube so I may have to retract my previous question. So whats up with the head tube? Special order maybe? Super curious now Ive fell in love with my Schwinn cruiser! Someone please enlighten me!?!

The taller headtube was on the bare frame that was available through the catalog.  They normally had the monster decals like the ones on the forks.  This frame wasn't available to the general public until 83 or 84, and I don't think it ever came from Schwinn with the video game looking decals, but if it came from Mike Poulson's collection, anything is possible :-)

I have one of these frames.  I wish I had the forks, and I wish I could find a set of those Monster decals!

Re: 1983 Schwinn Predator 24

Definitely the special order Aero.  Frame is re-decalled.  You and I are among very few people with the original fork to this frame.

kcbmx, cwstnsko, and I talked about decal sets a while ago.  One of these days, if you're up for it, those fork decals could really help with a replica set.

Welcome to the club.

Re: 1983 Schwinn Predator 24

btw, does your frame have a support bar welded across the chainstays?  Mine doesn't have one and I wish there was more information/timeline about that.
