Re: 1 piece cranks and sealed BB help!!!

NOT sure I understand your problem...but usually all there is
to it is to loosen & remove the locknut on the 'non-drive' side...
and then 'keep removing' pieces until you can slide the crank out
  of the BB shell.

Re: 1 piece cranks and sealed BB help!!!

Yeah, that's a standard set up...  this is actually a sealed BB like a 3 piece crank set up, it looks like there is no way to get the crank out without removing the BB, but no room to maneuver to get the BB out....  ugh..

Re: 1 piece cranks and sealed BB help!!!

You have to remove the bearings out of the cups first...before you are able to maneuver the crank out from the cups.

Re: 1 piece cranks and sealed BB help!!!

I had to tap the non-drive side out.  Actually came out pretty easy (once I figured it out).

Re: 1 piece cranks and sealed BB help!!!

They only way i do it is remove all the outer washers and nuts and then you should be able to wiggle the cranks enough to get a flat head in there and hit it with a hammer to get one of the bearings out...if anyone knows a better way please tell me and Cail.

Yeah, pretty bad design.  I've used a small wooden dowel.  Seemed to minimize damage.

Aw man.
I wish I was there to help you.
It's tough to get them out... You have to get a really skinny screw driver and tap from the non drive side to get the sprocket side bearing out first. And when you tap it can only be on the inner ring - not on the rubber bearing surface.

It can be a tedious process since you have limited room to get in there.
Sometimes the bearings just pop out of the cups.
But thats only if you're lucky.

I became a big fan of those plastic ultralight bearing cups after I ruined a few sets of bearings  doing something similar.

I'll keep my eye out for a replacement bearing for ya.

Re: 1 piece cranks and sealed BB help!!!

Oh, man...   smile  Yeah, getting the drive side out is easy, but getting a screwdriver in to get the non drive side out with at big ole disc in your way has to be impossible!  Man, I was frustrated.  mad  So, it's just sitting there still...  drive side is out, but non drive is still in there, can't get in through the drive side, to get the other one out.  OPC isn't sneaking through..  drats!  lol

Probably head to the LBS, I am sure they have a tool that can help me...  otherwise, I think there is a type of screwdriver, that is bent at the end, for tight places.. might find that, and try to pull it out.  What a gong show!  lol

Plus, I could have used a tad bit more patience on this one...  but my screwdriver slipped and went right through the bearing...  UGH.  I'll get over it someday...  smile

Re: 1 piece cranks and sealed BB help!!!

an easyer way to do it can be to knock the hole cup out. be careful with alloy cups though!

that side comes out together (drive or right side).

here is how my tioga setup came out.......

non drive side - remove lock nut, washer and bearing retainer (sealed may not have this but a threaded bearing spacer thing instead)
this side should be down to the arm and bearing cup. sealed bearing and everything else should already be removed.
pretty sure all of this is reverse threads.. but i never know for sure until i am looking at it.

then you just knock the other side out 'complete' (but it will not exit the BB due to the bearing cup still being in
the other side.

with cranks half hanging in and out, put a blunt screwdriver or punch into the BB to
knock the non-drive side bearing cup out.

then remove remaining assembly fully from drive side.

image - charlie brown.

this is the side you start with... you remove all that stuff first.

Re: 1 piece cranks and sealed BB help!!!

Ok, I think I am hearing you...  but I have some pics now, maybe you guys can help me further.  I just might not be getting it...

Here's what I've got...
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/morr5/General/Bikes/128.jpg

First, I took both nuts (reverse thread) off the non-drive side.  There was also a spacer type nut on there, which I removed, so here I am.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/morr5/General/Bikes/134.jpg

So, I maneuvered a screwdriver in to pop out the drive side bearing, which I was successful in getting out, except that my screwdriver slipped, and went through the bearing...

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/morr5/General/Bikes/135.jpg

I am over that now, but as you can see...  there is no way to get a screwdriver, or anything else through to pop out the non-drive side to get the cranks out...  unless I am missing something??

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/morr5/General/Bikes/136.jpg

Thanks again for everyone's help here!  smile

Re: 1 piece cranks and sealed BB help!!!

ahhh.. you have a very much 'in the way' power disk looking chainwheel thing.

that sucks bro !!!!

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/morr5/General/Bikes/134.jpg

in this pic, the bearing should also be out. just slide it off the arm.

this 'should' allow the drive side to drop a little bit more and 'hopefully'
this will give you the room you need to get a punch in.

it will also help if you move the gear and arm so the gear 'tucks' under the bottom of the bike
and not towards the seat tube. the seat tube has a bad habit of getting in the way when you are
trying to move the gear and crank out of the way.

another thing you could do is undo the chain wheel from the crank.
the lock hole on the chain wheel will be big enough to get a long
screwdriver through and if its long enough, it will reach the bearing
cup on the other side.

this later idea is not he best. you got 'lots' of loose metal that can clank and bang
into sweet paint/powder as you fish a screwdriver through this stuff.
try to be careful and wrap the seat tube in bubble wrap to protect it or something.

Re: 1 piece cranks and sealed BB help!!!

Could you bend a piece of steel into an L shape and tuck it around the back side of the sprocket?

Thought about that...  I just don't understand how something like this was created, with no good solution?  In doing that, not sure if it would create a very good angle to hit with a hammer... that damn disc is really in the way....

I believe there is a tool, that is basically a screwdriver that is bent at the tip, for tight spaces..  maybe I can pull the non-drive side out?

Re: 1 piece cranks and sealed BB help!!!

Good thinking Draw, about using the  sprocket pin hole to get a straight shot with the screwdriver. Gonna need a lot of patience - but it could help.

Cail, what cranks are you putting on the pink GT?

Yeah, this has been an interesting journey...   smile

Well..  going with the usual cheap option, instead of the real deal (ie double pinch RL Flights instead of the real deal), so in my typical fashion, I got a set of Powerbites...  my Dad welds, so I am hoping to weld the embossed "Primo" logo, grind it down, bead blast, then semi polish to silver...  Decal them "Power Series", and go from there.  smile

I think once I slow down on the amount of builds (More than likely when the baby comes), I will start just upgrading the bikes I have.  I just have a few more of my faves that I am either currently building, or in search of...  I want to get as many bikes as I can prior to baby, then dial them in slowly after that.  Really want to put REAL Peregrines on my 87, and almost finished 88 Team Masters, would LOVE to find a set of Group 1 cranks for my Green 86 (Another coming soon), and finally, some real deal Power Series for this....   Eventually.  Don't know if that makes any sense...  but, I am still learning as I go.  big_smile  Probably spending more money in the process than I need...  lol

dont worry we all do!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the thing is if something comes up when you,ve got the cash you,ve got to take it. or an other one probly wont be there the next time you,ve got the folding. and the more sought after the thing is the more you,ve got to bid high.
the only thing is the end product (the bike) still arent makeing the monny that brakeing them for parts is.......witch is a shame!!!!!!!!! we all need to get tougher as sellers i think!!!!lol

Re: 1 piece cranks and sealed BB help!!!

*Screeches nails across a chalkboard*

I'll fix this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad piece. Not like going down the shop pullin' stems or seatposts. Sealed bearings, swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go.

And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your endos, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll pull him for three, but I'll fix him, and install him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's just too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the bearings, the the cups, the whole damn thing.

I think we're gonna need a bigger boat.  lol
