1984 Kuwahara Exhibitionist

1984 Kuwahara Exhibitionist

Twin top tubes, twin down tubes, amongst the most sought after freestyle frames.

This is my holy grail of old school BMX.  I never saw any bitd (not surprising really as they cost a fortune even then!).  I first saw one in the BMX Museum and was blown away by it; up until then my favorite frame was an '84 Haro Master but everything changed when I saw the Kuwi - I had to have one!  I decided that if I was going to buy my perfect 80's f+f it had to be chrome, but it became clear that finding one would be tough.  After about six months I didn't find any Exhibitionists for sale atall even after posting regularly in the WTB section.  I figured that I would probably need to buy whatever became available and restore it myself.  Just as I was losing hope I found a thread containing 'Exhibitionist' and after a few PM's I had struck a deal with Subwax (top guy - thanks Neil!).  I've owned it for over a year now and as you can see in the pics it's beautiful and didn't require any work atall (except for decals - i've got them just how I want them now!)  It's a first generation that has been re-chromed and is in mint condition (barely appears to have been ridden before the re-chrome) - looks even better in the flesh.  It has pride of place in my front room and thus far despite finding most of the components for it, I can't bring myself to build it up!

Re: 1984 Kuwahara Exhibitionist

Wow, that frame is a work of art! I've never really taken much notice of these before, but it's by far the nicest freestyle frame i have ever seen. Very unusual with the twin top AND down tubes. If you ever decide to build it up, I'd love to see the result. Looks like it would ride great! Mark

Just bloody lovelly, they have always been under the radar, but also in my opinion the very best looking freestyler from any era, real special in chrome

Nice! I like the White decals on the chrome.

Having the project is what makes me happy, finishing it isn't something I think about.

Re: 1984 Kuwahara Exhibitionist

I am not a fan of freestyle - I know there are lots out there, but i have to agree that is the best looking freestyle frame i have ever seen, it is a truely remarkable bit of craftsmanship and I think you know already you a very lucky person! I too would be scared to build it as it looks like it should be in a gallery. Top find!

Re: 1984 Kuwahara Exhibitionist

I had a white one back in the day and you're right they were expensive and difficult to get even then, really fast & responsive freestyle frame sadly I can't remember what the heck I did with it. I'd love to build one up now.

Re: 1984 Kuwahara Exhibitionist

Love the story. cool

I totally agree.

I never saw one bitd but ever since I did on here I have been in love with them.

I would have to build it though because I would have to ride it. big_smile

Re: 1984 Kuwahara Exhibitionist

One of my riding buddies had one of these in chrome back in the day and it was a sweet bike.  He held on to it for a long time and may still have it.  Haven't seen him in probably 15 years now, but I did happen to see his mint Kuwahara looking as good as it ever did in a friend's bike shop while visiting my home town about 10 years ago.  It was not for sale, just hanging high for show.  They were rare back in 84 and I'd bet even more so today.  It is still are sweet bike.  Congratulations on getting your dream scoot.  I was fortunate enough to have my dream bikes back when I was a kid and they were all a dime a dozen in any cool bike shop.  Everything from the original Haro Freestyler to Hutch Trick Stars, to the RL 20-II.  Too bad I never thought about saving any of them after riding them all so hard for all those years.  It is great to look at everyone's restored bikes on here though.
