e-bay idiot selling stollen performer! gets it tight!

i have also posted this on bmx talk in the uk!

on ebay the other day i come across this half wit selling a stollen gt pro performer. after haveing my own perfomer stolen in early 86 just before the 86 worlds at that time i was scotish no5 and qulified for it,though coudent race it due to no bike i took this to heart and mailed said half wit what follows is
how it all went.
the idiots ad on e-bay.
1985 chrome GT Performer frame. Three holed dropouts and stamped 4130 on the rear top tube. Frame need redone, has some surface rust, and slight pitting, dropouts are ok, but has freewheel rub on the inside of the dropout. No dents, dings, cracks or rewelds. There is a mark on the bottom bracket as also is shown in the photos, probably where the serial number was. I dont know the history of the frame so I have no idea when that happened or even why. Still a solid foundation for a restoration or a nice rider with a little cleaning up. Original stickers are cracked and crazed.

ask all questions before bidding.

some possibile biders questions!

Q: Hi, can you tell me the serial number of the frame? thanks 03-Jan-10
A: If you read the description the mark on the bottom bracket I am thinking is where the serial number was. I know GT did not put their numbers there, they were on the dropouts but there is NOTHING stamped on either dropout, inside or out. I checked the other 7 or so Performers I have here and their S#'s are all on the dropouts. Like I said either GT put it on the BB for this one or it got out of the factory with no serial number being stamped on it.

Ask seller a question

so i did

Dear 1little-e,
the number on santa ana bikes was on the left hand dropout if its not there it will be on the bb witch means is a jap frame if its been ground off it means its a stolen bike. also you cant prove its an 85 without it.

so he replies

Yea, I'm not stupid.
And it has the coveted 4130 stamped under the GT logo which is desireable.
Duh, about being a stolen bike, but I have no history of the bike, I got it about a month ago which I stated in the ebay description.
They are the original stickers so that helps determine the year.
I have owned about 30 performers/world tours in the past year alone so I know a little about them.
- 1little-e

to witch i replied,

Dear 1little-e,
where the other 30 stolen as well? your missing the point if its a stolen bike it is worth $0. good luck in selling it.im sure some idiot will pay monny for it.

so he replies,

Well, considering 95 percent of the bikes I buy to resell come from ebay, YUP some may have well been stolen. They do not come with a lineage sheet of their lifetime achievements or discretions. I can give you the persons ebay name I bought the bike from so you can go bother them as well if its such a big deal. And yes, I have bought and sold some bikes on ebay that had the same issues of no serial numbers and YES they sell quite well as most people could care less about the fact there isnt a serial number, they are restoring it anyway. It just proves "one persons junk is another persons treasure"
Good day.
- 1little-e
the frame is currently sitting at £21.29p with 4h to go. so much for"one persons junk is another persons treasure" i thought these frames are worth about £150-£200 that about $200-$330 depending on condition. well its good too see most pepole are,nt take,n in by e-bay sales like this.
this is the item no if you fansy winding him up about it,120513242864

Re: e-bay idiot selling stollen performer! gets it tight!

If it was stolen 20 years ago, it could have changed hands 2 or 20 times since then, you think that he should just sit on it? A guy with 3000+ feedback on eBay is not really deserving to be called out by someone looking to settle a 20+ year old score.

It could have been stolen, recovered by the police, returned to the OG owner, and sold by him as easy as any other unsubstantiated guess.

I'm with Phillip, chill.

Sure, but, you don't call the guy an idiot out of the gate. That's where you got sidetracked. Calling a guy with that kind of eBay history an idiot makes no sense. I've seen auctions in the past week cancelled by eBay due to shady stuff, and you can't get 3000+ on eBay if you're up to no good. Well, I hope not....

@nofeet1hand, +1 I'm with you, dude cool

I'm sure we can all agree that as long as we're alive, these bikes are sacred.  After we're all dead 100 years from now, then maybe it will be safe to sell a BMX with the serial-number scratched off.  Maybe then, their great-great-great-grandkids can try to sell it on "Antiques Roadshow", but I might still be there (because I took my vitamins) shouting "There's no serial number!" and when the show's security guards try to escort me off I'll start beating them with my walker - I'm going to do that for real, I just added that to my checklist of "things to do in life".

Re: e-bay idiot selling stollen performer! gets it tight!

how do you know that the original owner decided to grind off the serial?

I think you are assuming and you know what happens if you assume?

It makes an ASS out of U and ME.

If i was the bloke selling I wouldnt have even emailed you back......

You must understand that nearly ever frameset bought from ebay has probably gone through the hands of at least 2 collectors let alone who ever owned it bitd and then sold it to his mate for a fried marsbar.wink and then next guy and the next.

chill winston.

Re: e-bay idiot selling stollen performer! gets it tight!

Buy it and hand it into the police , with no serial it'll most probably be unclaimed and in 3 weeks time of them holding it , It will legally become yours with the police documents to prove it ! Ive done it with a couple of things Ive found

Re: e-bay idiot selling stollen performer! gets it tight!

I buy and re-sell stuff on ebay all the time. With things this old it's pretty hard to tell where they came from.

As for this 1little-e guy...I've bought stuff from him before. His stuff appears to be legit but the guy is a complete d-bag! I've never dealt with a bigger a-hole on ebay. Everytime you ask him a question he feels the need to put a smartass remark at the end of his answer. So I don't buy from him anymore.

Re: e-bay idiot selling stollen performer! gets it tight!

yhea it was his smart ass answer that made me decide to post in the first place..... well i think the moral of this story is not to be nieve when buying bikes from dodgy pepole,if it sounds to good to be true then it probly is. all the more so as our bikes become even more collectable and valuble, the more get rich quick pond life its going to atract, and the best way to get rich quick is sell some thing you got for free for its true value, and the best way to get some thing free is steel it. classic car guys have know,en this for some time so only buy parts from reputible dealers or other enthusiasts and our bikes are appriceateing faster than all but the most exotic of classic cars.

Re: e-bay idiot selling stollen performer! gets it tight!

IM ACTUALLY AGREE WITH "NOFEET1HAND". READ THE ANSWER HE GAVE TO THE PERSON ABOUT THE SERIAL. HE PLAYED DUMB LIKE HE DID NOT KNOW GT PUT NUMBERS ON THE BB. BUT THEN TO "NOFEET1HAND" HE STATES HE CLEARLY KNOWS QUITE ABIT ABOUT THESE FRAMES. SO HE PURPOSELY MISLEADING IN HIS DESCRIPTION AND HIS ANSWERING.
