How to print stickers using your inkjet printer

Preface: I just want to start this post saying that if you want quality reproduction (repop) stickers that need to look like the originals from BITD, stick with the reputable sticker makers and sellers on this site.  If, however, you're willing to forgo a little quality or just enjoy doing something yourself, you may be able to make stickers using equipment you already own.

Stuff used in this example:
- HP DeskJet 970 Cxi (with genuine HP ink)
- White vinyl inkjet sticker paper (wwwtexascraft.com)
- Microsoft PowerPoint

I used this bike (http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/mosh/8525) as inspiration for the stickers I wanted to produce and read somewhere that the Ghost Gothic TrueType font matched pretty closely to the Mosh text on the down tube.  I headed into PowerPoint and began playing around.  I found the Mosh logo graphic and the Giant logo on the Internet and saved them.  Lastly, instead of a Kastan signature frame I decided to make my own signature frame. cool  Since the bike was flat black I inverted the colors of everything to white and drew black boxes around them, then sent them to the bottom layer.  Here is what the PowerPoint page looked like:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_Posts/PrintStickers01.jpg

I picked up a couple packs of vinyl paper.  Once clear and one white:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_Posts/PrintStickers02.jpg

Here is a full sheet right out of the printer:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_Posts/PrintStickers03.jpg

I cut the stickers out with plain old scissors:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_Posts/PrintStickers04.jpg

Tip: when making stickers for a black surface such as these, take a black Sharpie and color the outside edge of the sticker.  Even though the white vinyl isn't that thick, the white edge of the sticker still stood out once applied to the frame.

I didn't do anything special when applying them - just peeled and stuck them on.  I did apply more flat clear over the entire frame and decals hoping to blend the flat black paint and black ink of the stickers.  They look good in person but don't quite match each other.  They photograph worse and look like even less of a match.  Here is a shot of the stickers applied to the frame:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_Posts/PrintStickers05.jpg

As always, I learned several things on this first attempt at making stickers using my inkjet.  First, I learned that my Epson R200 (which works perfectly for waterslide decals) does not print well on vinyl.  At least not with the ink cartridges I had in it at the time.  Maybe genuine Epson ink would have worked but on my first try the ink beaded up into tiny little balls and the stickers were not usable:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_Posts/PrintStickers07.jpg

lol Edit 10 months later (Oct 2010): the decal paper was in upside down!  It works just fine...

Luckily, I have a second, older HP DeskJet 970Cxi which did the job perfectly.  Here are a few shots of the finished bike:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_Posts/PrintStickers11.jpg

In addition to this frameset I also played with a few other graphics I found online.  Again, these are not UltraHive quality but they're not bad for do it yourself...

My wife has both Cricut (www.cricut.com) and Yudu (www.whatdoyudu.com) machines.  I too have been wondering about using them for bike stuff.  If you try it let me know how it works.

Re: How to print stickers using your inkjet printer

THere is a program for the cricut expressions witch is the highest end model that allows you to upload your own images and cut them out . My wife has the cricut expressions but the program is like 90 bucks so we dont have it yet.Probably wont work on multi colored stuff but monocromatic it probably will do great.
Unless you print each different section or color and apply them that way. we plan to get the program soon so I will let everyone know how it works.

Re: How to print stickers using your inkjet printer

I think some people try to hard to make stickers not look like stickers. Everyone knows they are stickers no one is mistaking them for awesome hand painting or anything so dont worry to much if they dont match perfect they still look awesome.

Sweet!  I just looked and so does my wife.  Is it called Cricut DesignStudio?  There is a free trial download here:

http://www.cricut.com/cds/DesignStudioTrial1.aspx

Gotta go to work now but will explore this later...

Re: How to print stickers using your inkjet printer

I've also made decals using the papilio paper. It's good stuff. They also make a clear vinyl overlay that you can put over your printed decals that gives them a bit of UV protection from fading and more importantly makes them waterproof.

Re: How to print stickers using your inkjet printer

I just got done making some new decals for my Skyway Street Styler and they turned out like ass, lol. Black bike, and I was doing a bright red fading to yellow decal on the clear glossy vinyl sheet and you can not even tell the image is there for some reason. In my paint program the stickers look awesome on black. On the bike, as soon as you pull the sticker off it almost looks transparent for some reason(the lettering, not the sticker, i know that is transparent, lol.).
I am starting to guess I need to do this on a black background and actually print the black background.

Re: How to print stickers using your inkjet printer

I'm pretty sure to get vibrant colors, you have to do the same thing as screenprinting on black shirts, you need to lay down white 1st behind the colors you have.

Yup. We had a t-jet tshirt printer and what we had to do was spray a pre print substance let that dry the the ripper program would print the image with white first then a second run of colour on black shirts because black is the absence of all colours

Re: How to print stickers using your inkjet printer

You are correct.  Our inkjet printers lay down transparent colors because they were designed to print on white paper.  Here are a couple ways to deal with making your own decals for dark colored frames.

Print on white vinyl or waterslide decal paper (and color match your background): http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=194539

Re: How to print stickers using your inkjet printer

Yeah, I realized my mistake after ordering a full 10 sheet pack of the transparent vinyl(figured I would have learned the first time) and trying to put black behind the image. Still came out the same way. I fixed one sticker by putting a sheet of paper behind it and then sticking it on the bike. This is when i realized that I needed to get the white vinyl and not the clear.
I had no idea the printer could not print white, lol.
