1981 SE Racing OM Flyer 26

Rare Reynolds 531 model with mitered and holed joints

Extra Pics added below
These 531 frames started production in late 1980 supposedly sold as 1981 models (600 or so produced before switching to 4130)
I Acquired the frame and fork in 2008 it had a really bad repair done on it, someone ran too short of a post in it and cracked the seat collar almost all the way off.
Sent it to Sal (original welder for SE, welded this exact frame BITD) he repaired the Aweful brazing job that cracked again after the first 1 mile ride I did on my first build in june of 2008.
The repair was completed in autumn of 2009
Been working on this build since then, I think I am finally happy with it. I think I have gone through 7 or 8 versions of this build before settling on the way it sits today. Components changed, color combos changed etc. etc...
I built it period correct for 1981
All parts are original finish except for the frame and fork and cranks.
all stickers are vintage except for the toptube decal the headtube decal the rim decals and the team products decal
Bars are suspected to be reproduction, sold to me as originals
Frame - SE 531 OM Flyer serial number 000364 repaired by SAL no tubes replaced this one features mitered and holed joints.
Fork - SE Landing gear
Stem - Square corner Tuf Neck (pat Pending)
Headset - NOS Tange MX-5 with NOS Dirt Skirt and NOS Suntour headlock
Bars - SE Powerwing cruiser bars (more than likely repro)
Grips - NOS Oakley 1's with crud plugs
Wheels - NOS Ukai 2.125 rims laced 4 cross to Sealed Sunshine hubs (laced BITD)
Freewheel - White Industries 17 T
Tires - NOS Panaracer 2.125
Rear Brake Caliper - NOS Dia-Compe MX 1000
Brake Lever - NOS Team Products
Brake Pads - NOS Kool Stop finned
Cranks - Profile 2nd gen cranks (These are vintage not repro)
Bottom Bracket - Profile current gen BB with repro bolts
Chain Ring - NOS Shimano 39 T
Chain - NOS Izumi
Pedals - NOS KKT LMX magnesium
Seat - NOS Cinelli Unicanitor padded
Seat Post - SE
Seat Post Clamp - NOS Diacompe
Pads - SE Vinyl Rad Pads
Brake cable - Vintage ribbed tandem housing and cable
I just cant stand not thanking a few people here that contributed
Sexnbmx (Scot) , Blikum (Tony),Carbizguy (Lionel), CW (Calvin), "G" (Georg).
and all the guys that contributed knowledge too many to list you know who you are.
This thing rides like a dream, I couldnt be happier.
I have some Number plates for it and hope to post pics with them mounted soon......once the whether clears up.

Re: 1981 SE Racing OM Flyer 26

That is my dream 26" for sure. Nice job!!!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new BMX bike. Then I realised that  The Lord doesn't work that way, so I stole one and asked him to forgive me.

Re: 1981 SE Racing OM Flyer 26

Here is some reference material in regards to my production model 531 OM Flyer. this is from OS-BMX:

first from the university of bmx forum, this was pulled from the OM Flyer thread which was an interview with the OM himself:

"2) When did the 2nd generation OM Flyers begin production? What were the changes and why were they instituted?

Like all our bikes, the OM Flyer was in constant development and improvement. The vagueness of the question has me stumped. I never had a specific "2nd Generation OM Flyer". I did have both "1010 high tensil steel" and "4130 Chromolly" frames initially. I also later produced some Reynolds 531 Manganese molly. Those were ultra trick and light with "holed and mitered" joints and double butted tubes."

And this was posted by Lionel (carbizguy) after more questions came up in regards to his SI Team OM......:

"OK, here's the deal.

I spoke to Scot today, he hopes this will straighten out some of the confusion.

Condensed story....

The SI OM was not a production frame, but there were more than 3, Scot said the number was more like a dozen. He said some of the original owners he remembers are of course himself, Scot Breithaupt, Brett Walk, Rod Beckering, Steve Potts, Dwight Lowell and Perry Kramer (forgive my spelling) The team SI OM weighed in at just over 3 1/2 pounds and they were crumplers, scary light but wadded up and broke.

A rep for some Reynolds company was trying to get SE, GT and a few other BMX companies on board with Reynolds. He offered them a straight gauge reynolds tubing, which was heavier than the 531 used on the SI's. Scot said they made somewhere between 600-1000 of these straight gauge Reynolds frames, (still very limited in comparison to the standard chromo OMs). The reynolds was a pain to work with and obviously in the end, they choose Chromo over Reynolds.

Hope that helps! "

Thats the info I have.
