1979 Malvern Star Maxi

Malvern Star Maxi BMX - 100% original

I just saved this bike and a few others from the local tip this week and thought the bmxmuseum could use the image. Appears to be 100% original Malvern Star Maxi from Australia. Black Takagi MX cranks, Tange seat pole clamp, Araya rims, Shimano rear foot brakes, Original frame paint, decals and original Maxi vinyl pad set. Serial number 2310853.

Re: 1979 Malvern Star Maxi

Thank you, it is hard to know what to do with a bike like this. If I was to put it on Ebay as is it would only achieve a fraction of the price it would if it was fully restored. However, to restore it means to track down decals(a Mongoose would be easy - a Maxi a bit harder), replace the rusty snaps on the pads, try and repaint the frame etc, etc. Then I believe the cost would far outweigh the value of the bike. I guess you only restore for nostalgia or investment, not just because the bike deserves a second chance.

Re: 1979 Malvern Star Maxi

Personally I would tidy it up and if parts come up grab them if not find a spot in your garage/shed and just ride it now and again like it should

Re: 1979 Malvern Star Maxi

I just sold my maxi on ebay for $56 and it was a lot better than that!  It also included the Tange Seat clamp and Takagi chainrings and cranks + pedals and headset and bars and grips and I threw in the original maxi pads for free. Not a bad deal really.

Re: 1979 Malvern Star Maxi

I Know,
I was going to buy it !!!
It was a great deal, but I just don't have the space.
It was a great resto project with all original parts. I hope that it remains that way.

I console myself by saying that it is going to a better home. :-)

Re: 1979 Malvern Star Maxi

Not to worry. This bike is long gone. I parted it out and sold it off to finance something to do with a Mongoose...
